ZJU cements ties with University of Paris-Saclay

On June 14, President WU Zhaohui signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation with Gilles Bloch, President of the University of Paris-Saclay under the witness of YUAN Jiajun, Governor of Zhejiang Province, and Valérie Pécresse, President of the Regional Council of Île-de-France.

In accordance with the MoU, the two universities will promote cooperation in faculty and student exchange, double degree and joint research programs in various fields, including economics, mathematics, physics, materials science, energy, computer science, agronomy and medicine.

WU Zhaohui extended his warm welcome to the delegation led by Gilles Bloch. “Zhejiang University and the University of Paris-Saclay have a lot in common with each other. Both universities run on a large scale, offer a wide spectrum of subjects, develop at a fast pace and boast unique strengths,” Wu said. “While implementing the 'Double First-class' initiative and the Global ZJU strategy, Zhejiang University is willing to join hands with the University of Paris-Saclay to pursue excellence together.”

According to Gilles Bloch, the University of Paris-Saclay will complete its merge in 2020. By then, this university, integrating three public universities, four grande écoles and seven research institutes, will build a vigorous innovation-driven ecological system and shift into a fully-fledged phase. He laid immense stress on the partnership between the two universities and extended a cordial invitation to WU Zhaohui to visit the University of Paris-Saclay.

Among the members of the University of Paris-Saclay, Zhejiang University has established partnership with the University of Paris-Sud, CentraleSupélec and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in various forms.

The delegation also promoted specific cooperation programs with the School of Mechanical Engineering, the School of Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, the College of Optical Science and Engineering and the College of Information Science & Electronic Engineering.

The University of Paris-Saclay was established in 2015, with the aim to become a top-ranking, research-focused French federal university. It aims at a top-10 position in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), but “the first goal is to be the top university in continental Europe”. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to maximizing the economic and business potential of the Paris-Saclay project through research, via university and research spin-offs, as well as industrial research collaboration with established companies.
