报告摘要

Industry and higher education sectors often have complementary expertise and facilities. Outstanding achievements, such as the development of novel theories, innovation of technologies and economic benefits to both sectors, can often be obtained through effective research collaboration.

This lecture will use a few university-industry collaboration projects, of which the speaker has been the initiator and leader, to showcase the innovation, strength of relationship with industry partners, outreach inclusion, wider outcomes, and cultural impact. The projects to outline are “Surface Integrity Characterization of Sapphire Wafers for Wireless and Fibre Optic Semiconductor Industry”, which has led to tens of millions of annual turnover for the manufacturer, and “Development of New Superabrasives Cutting Tool Technology”, which has brought about a new polishing technology and machine with a potential market value on the order of 100 millions of dollars. Academic achievements associated with these technological accomplishments will also be highlighted.
