Strategic Research on Marine Science at Zhejiang University

In February 2012, Zhejiang University initiated strategic research projects on marine areas. Eight strategic research teams composed of experts and professors from relevant disciplines were set up, covering research fields such as ocean exploration and equipment engineering, marine delivery vehicles, marine energy engineering, marine living resources engineering, marine ecology and environmental engineering and so on.
 
Ocean exploration and equipment engineering (including ocean information engineering)
Team members: Xu Wen, Ye Ying, Yang Chanjun, Wu Chunming, Liu Renyi, Fu Jianzhong
Tasks: seafloor observatory network technology, marine mobile platform observation techbology - underwater glider, underwater small AUV stealth and detection technology, dynamic technology for connection between seafloor observatory network and marine mobile platform, long-distance transmission technology for marine monitoring, seabed minerals in situ cutting and collection equipment, marine data integration and information services technology, etc.
Recommendations: integration and demonstration of automatic monitoring of marine environment in the East China Sea fishery and fine disaster forecasting and warning system, heavy equipment underwater docking and self-assembly technology, far-reaching ocean observing communication system, cloud-based marine data integration and information services technology, geometry-and-algebra-based modeling and process evolution expressions of marine spacetime field, Western Pacific Argo data developing, dynamic monitoring and service platform technology and product demonstration for Zhejiang coastal waters ecological environment, underwater wireless sensor network key technology and test systems, etc.
 
Marine delivery vehicles
Team members: Tan Jianrong, Leng Jianxing, Tong Shuiguang, Gu Linyi, Shi Yimin, Zhang Shuyou
Tasks: Deep-sea mobile carriage and multi-body collaboration. Designing a team and support for the combination of engineering, production and research. Formulating project plans to complete in the 12th Five-Year period and the 13th Five-Year period.
Recommendations: Based on the needs of our deep-sea space station for multi-body collaboration, and the advantages of Zhejiang University in the field of deep-sea equipment, operations and collaborative control and etc., research will be conducted on deep sea delivery platform and ROV with collaboration function modules, high efficiency 360 degree podded propeller, independent operating underwater robot and ROV collaboration, independent ROV retractable underwater winch and collaboration retraction control, machine vision-based high-precision ranging and autonomous positioning, etc. During the 12th Five-Year period, complete research on mobile deep-sea carrying platform position and manner control, the location and recovery characteristics of ROV for observation and overloaded operation, image information sharing and decision-making between mobile deep-sea delivery platform and multiple ROVs, etc. During the 12th Five-Year period, complete the overall integrated design of deep sea delivery platform, and research and development of collaborative autonomous functioning deep sea ROV platform.
 
Marine energy engineering
Team members: Cen Kefa, Li Wei, Wei Wei, Cheng Jun, Wang Linxiang, Chi Yong
Tasks: Comprehensive research and analysis of the domestic and international status and trend of development deep-sea oil and gas exploration technology, marine power generation technologies at home and abroad, marine renewable energy grid technology, marine cryogenic technology and marine energy industry, etc.; analysis of the advantages of Zhejiang University in fields of current energy and wave energy power generation, renewable energy grid, marine debris energy, marine biomass energy, solar thermal power generation and water desalination, marine cold energy utilization, etc.; analysis of the status and main tasks of Zhoushan energy economy, major energy projects in the planning of Zhoushan City, marine renewable energy development and utilization demonstration projects, advanced technology and equipment for the new energy industry and new energy technology research and development services agencies in Zhoushan and other major national, provincial and city needs in the field of ocean energy.
Recommendations: To cater to major national needs and Zhejiang marine economic development, it is recommended to carry out research on wind energy, solar energy, wave energy and ocean current energy generation, multi-island renewable energy smart grid, self-sufficient solar desalination technology, marine fishing boat energy saving technology, liquefied natural gas (LNG) cold energy utilization, application of seawater source heat pump technology, memory alloy technology-based marine thermoelectric power generation and so on.
 
Marine living resources
Team members: Yang Weijun, Shao Qinjun, Wang Yan, Ma Zhongjun
Tasks: To accent the necessity of carrying out studies on marine ecology and biological resources. Make comparative analysis of the status and trend of research on marine ecology and biological resources in the United States, European Union, Japan, Australia, and China. Conduct research on offshore conservation and ocean fisheries engineering and technology, the marine culture engineering technology and equipment, marine drug and biological products engineering and technology, marine food quality security and processing engineering technology.
Recommendations: In line with the national ocean strategic plans, conduct research on biological resources and genetic resources development, microbial structure and function genes in the East China Sea, frontier biotechnology in marine culture seed project, marine full cycle farming technology, efficient and environmentally friendly artificial feed and vaccines development and application, the governance of offshore environmental pollution.
 
Marine ecology and environmental engineering
Team members: Zhu Lizhong, Lou Zhanghua, Liu Weiping, Wang Ke, Gao Haichun
Tasks: Conduct research on ecological and environmental protection in the East China Sea, marine environmental pollution problems, causes of offshore marine environmental pollution, sudden and potential pollution of the marine environment. Put forward the strategies and action programs for protection of the ecological environment in the East China Sea and Zhejiang province marine environment protection programs.
Recommendations: Offshore marine environment monitoring technology and applications, flux and impact factors of greenhouse gas in the East China Sea, assessment of impacts of sea reclamation works on ecological environment, eutrophication and red tide control engineering, fisheries waters ecological environment repair and reconstruction engineering, emergency treatment materials, equipment and technology for marine pollution accidents, such as oil spills and others, persistent toxic pollution process in the Hangzhou Bay, ecological risks and prevention measures, environmental pollution remediation project in Yueqing Bay, the typical waters and exclusive economic zone (Zhoushan) ecological protection engineering and so on.
