Four Zhejiang University Professors Enrolled in National High-Level Talent Special Support Plan

Jan. 15, 2013

On January 14, “National High-Level Talent Special Support Plan” announced the first batch of candidates for public scrutiny including 6 outstanding talents and 72 leading talents in science and technology. Four professors at Zhejiang University were on the list -- Professor Bao Hujun of State Key Lab of CAD&CG, Professor Sheng Kuang of College of Electrical Engineering, Professor Gao Xiang of Department of Energy Engineering and Professor Zhou Jiyong of College of Animal Sciences.

"National High-Level Talent Special Support Plan” is a support program for domestic high-level talents initiated in August 2012. The overall goal is to select and support 10,000 outstanding talents, leading talents and young talents in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, social sciences and higher education as a complement to Recruitment Program of Global Experts. The goal of young leading talents in science and technology support program is to train and nurture a group of young talents to lead the scientific and technological development of relevant industry and organize and complete major scientific tasks.

The research of four scholars selected in the program focuses on fields including virtual reality and visual analysis, new power electronics technology, air pollution control and animal disease control.

With the rapid development of information technology, data acquisition, transmission and mobile presentation in audio, image, video and geometric dimensions become convenient. The challenges in current computing systems include how to make integrated analysis of offline or online data and derive useful information or laws to solve problems in complex application systems. The “Virtual reality and visual analysis” team led by Professor Bao Hujun intends to conduct computing and analysis in large-scale virtual and reality mixed environment.

Power electronics technology is an important technology transforming a variety of energy into high-quality power in efficient ways to save energy, protect environment and improve people’s quality of life. With the rapid development of new power electronic devices, power systems is one of the most important and potential market for the application of power electronics technology. The “New power electronics technology” team led by Professor Sheng Kuang attempts to make breakthroughs in basics in power electronics technology and strategic technological bottlenecks and focuses on the development and application of new power electronic devices to promote the application of new power electronics technology in smart grid. Their research is conducted on three integrated aspects: core devices, critical equipment and smart grid, and aims at establishing a new power electronics technology system with China’s own intellectual property rights.

The control of sulfur, NOx, mercury and other pollutants is not only an important topic of research in air pollution control, but also one of the heated and difficult issues in current international environmental studies. The “Air pollution control project” headed by Professor Gao Xiang focuses on the development of key technology in air pollution control and strategic products. The project is concerned essentially with the control of PM2.5, SO2, NOx, Hg and other composite pollutants emitted by coal-fired boilers, steel furnaces, furnaces for construction materials and so on. It will develop synergistic removal technology for multiple pollutants, resource utilization technology, advanced fine particle control technology, NOx Hg control catalyst and etc., to promote energy-saving and emission-reduction and the development of air pollution control industry.

The “Animal disease control technology” team headed by Professor Zhou Jiyong focuses on research on infectious epidemics hazarding animal husbandry in

China. It conducts studies on pathogenic mutation and molecular epidemiology, virus reverse genetic technology, antigen efficient expression technology, high-density mass culture technology, RNA interference-based animal breeding, interaction between pathogen and animal host and so on.
