National Research Center of the History of the Chinese Language

Zhejiang University Research Center for History of Chinese Language was founded in November 1999 and was appointed as the key humanities research base among the national universities by the Ministry of Education in December 2000. Taking advantages of the academic strengths and influences of PH.D. Program of Chinese Language and Literature, the PH.D. Program of Ancient Chinese Literature, and the Post-PH.D. Program of Chinese Language and Literature, The Research Center is specialized in and renowned for its academic reputation in the field of Mid-Ancient Chinese language, Modern Chinese language, and Traditional Interpretation of Ancient Texts. This is the first Chinese language research center of its kind open up and accessible to the public after the new Zhejiang University was established. Professor Fang Yi Xin heads this research center as director with Zhang Yong Quan and Wang Yun Lu as deputy directors. The research center consists of Pre-Ancient Chinese Language Research Institute, Mid-Ancient Chinese Language Research Institute, Modern Chinese Language Research Institute and Chinese Character Information Processing Research Office.

The university enjoys a long history and good reputation in the field of Chinese language history research. Early in 1950's and 1960's, the famous Chinese linguists like Jiang Liang Fu, Ren Ming Shan, Jiang Li Hong and Guo Zai Yi taught in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Hangzhou University (one of the forerunners of the recently-merged Zhejiang University). Since then, Chinese Language and Literature research has been specialty subject of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature in the university and it has made rapid progress. Professor Jiang Liang Fu's works Interpretation of Chu Ballads (Chu Ci Tong Gu) and Professor Jiang Li Hong's Explanations on Dun Huang Bian Wen (Dun Huang Bian Wen Zi Yi Tong Xi) were granted the first prize in the First Session of Humanities Research Achievements organized by the Ministry of Education. Guo Zai Yi's Annotations on Verse of Tang Dynasty (Tang Dai Bai Hua Shi Xi Ci) and Notes on the Ancient and Classical Texts (Xun Gu Cong Gao) won the second place in the First Session Yong Linguists Nominations by the Academy of State Social Sciences and still the second place in the First Session of Humanities Research Achievements Exhibition hosted by the Ministry of Education. Pioneered and supported by the senior scholars, a large number of young scholars are burgeoning and gaining their fame in the academic circles. Among them are Zhang Yong Quan, Fang Yi Xin, Wang Yun Lu and Wang Zhen, who have made their academic fame in Mid-Ancient and modern Chinese language research. Zhang Yong Quan's A Study of Dun Huang Vulgar Characters(Dun Huang Shu Zi Yan Jiu) won the first place in Second Session of Humanities Research Achievements Exhibitions sponsored by the Ministry of Education, and his Critical Notes on Dun Huang Bian Wen (Dun Huang Bian Wen Jiao Zhu) , CO-edited with Huang Zhen, made the third place in First Session State Social Sciences Fund Project.

The research center is composed of 20 professionals, 12 of them are standing researchers, 10 of the 12 are full professors, 2 associate professors(8 of the 12 have PH.D. degree and 2 have master degree), and 7 visiting professors and one visiting associate professor (5 of them have PH.D. degree and 2 have master degree). Most of the members under age 50 are professors and PH.D. scholars. They form an optimum scholastic and professional team. The research center boasts of first-rated young linguists like Fang Yi Xin, Zhang Yong Quan, Wang Yun Lu, and Wang Zhen, as well as Chinese Character Information Processing specialist like Huang Xiao Shan, Yu Zhong Xin and Zhou Chang Le. This professional team forms a mix of rich tradition and new concept and exhibits profound academic sophistication. Since 1996, the research center has undertaken 23 projects at the provincial or ministerial level or above, and 17 others. The average research fund for each professional is RMB 149.1k Yuan. And the research center has published 17 books, 192 papers and won 12 prizes at the provincial or ministerial level or above.
