The first week: Hello, Oxford!

2018-08-08

On the night of August 1st, after over 14 hours of continuous flight, we arrived in the UK and began our study tour at LMH.

About the Programme

Each summer and winter, Oxford Study Abroad Programme is held at Lady Margaret Hall (LMH),  University of Oxford. Two courses, Science & Technology Course and Humanities & Social Course, are well organized for students from around the world. The programme allows the students to benefit from knowledge of the University and other world-famous institutions and cultural experience in the city. The courses are organized in the forms of lectures, seminars as well as sharing sessions.

Our thoughts about this programme

Oxford really renewed my definition of a “University City”.  There are more than 30 colleges scattered in the town. Each college has around 400 students, and each has its unique features. Oxford has a history of hundreds of years, but her development never stops. She made her turn from a Christian school where women were not allowed to come, to one of the best universities around the world. Compared with Oxford and her colleges, ZJU still has a long way to go.

I really admire the academic system here. Just like our college, students have their tutors. At Oxford tutors give students assignments every week and the next week they will meet to discuss the work. I think it's good to have such kind of communication between tutors and students. In our college, tutors and students lack such communications. Beside this, there exist other gaps between Oxford colleges and CKC college. From my perspective, to build a “Double First-class” university, we can’t stop learning from the top universities in the world.

From my perspective, the past few days has been a really unforgettable experience. I have learnt a lot through the everyday class, including computer science, 3D printing and artificial intelligence. The professors here use a quite different way to teach. In a lecture, there's a large amount of knowledge for students to absorb, which is quite a challenge for me. But I think that's also a good way to urge me to study hard and try my best to have a good understanding of the content.

In addition, we have various kinds of activities, such as watching movies, going to a concert and other ice breaking activities. Not only did we have fun, but we also gained friendship and team spirit. The experience of studying at LMH is really beneficial and exceptional for me,  which has widely broadened my horizon. I hope I can take part in some similar programs in the future.

When I first saw Oxford, I saw red brick buildings telling a long history. The world's institutions of learning, the holy land of humanity, whose enduring cause lies in the atmosphere of the whole school. In just a few days of learning,  from Virgil to magna carta, I was amazed by all the elegant old professors whose words were concise and profound. What is democracy? What is politics? What is history? They led every student who attended the class to have their own views. In the seminar after class every day, all leaders are very approachable and can take our English level into full consideration, guiding us to think by ourselves.

It's so lucky to have the opportunity to feel the charm of Oxford University at a close distance. I am full of expectations for the next few days, hoping for a special experience in my life.

I'm privileged to have the oppurtunity to enjoy the lectures taught by the professors of Oxford. The professors all enjoy high reputations in their research fields, and are always willing to answer our naive questions and share with us the up-to-date direction of their researchs.

In the meantime, living in the LMH college, walking on the land of Oxford that has witnessed the growth of so many talents,  surrounded by medieval castles and cathedrals, all give you a chance to really think about what it takes to be a great man.

All in all, I'm so glad that I came to LMH.

Having been in Oxford for six days now, we have already learned a great deal about this wonderful city and the world-famous university.

It has come to my notice that many of the students, as well as the professors here, actually come from different countries in the world, making Oxford University a diverse and open place for anyone who longs for new knowledge of different fields.

Through our courses, we learned about the educational system functioning in Oxford nowadays and realized that students here truly have great enthusiasm for learning and creativity. It also has a positive impact on us, leading us to think seriously again about our academic goals and the outlook for the relationship between humans and technology. We’ve come to know about 3D printing, artificial intelligence, visualization, cloud computing and so on. Through all these subjects, the outstanding professors in their respective field has brought us a brand-new perspective of our own major and more importantly, the future well-being of the entire mankind.

And during our free time, the city has provided us with a bunch of spectacular museums and libraries with wide-ranged themes. Actually, the University itself has so many different colleges waiting to be explored. It seems impossible for us to enjoy all the beautiful lawns and halls here in the colleges, which is a great pity. But it also reminds us to seize the moment and make the most of every second during our stay here. I firmly believe that the coming days are going to be even better.

The trip to LMH, Oxford is absolutely marvelous. I was firstly surprised by the hospitality of professors and students here, who patiently helped us adapt to the life in Oxford. Most importantly, I am encouraged to develop an innovative thinking mode. All in all, I really enjoy this trip, and it broadens my horizen.

Oxford is not only a city, but also a university. The colleges are located alongside the streets in the city, so people will tour the University as they walk through the city. After several lectures and seminars, I feel the academic atmosphere at Oxford is quite open-minded, which also contributes to the culture of the city. Although the courses are quite hard for me, I will try my best to experience everything, and then enjoy it.

What Oxford impresses me the most is that students enjoy a really important position. Not only does the University provide superior resources in the world, but every detail here is designed to make the students feel important about themselves. And only when people consider themselves to be unique, important and valuable, can they reach their full potential.
