Laboratory of Modern Optical Instrumentation

I. Introduction

The laboratory consisting of 5 research group, i.e.. Optical thin film technology, optical radiation measurement & spectrum technology, laser & nonlinear optics and photons, precision optical testing instrument and Center for Optical and Electromagnetic Research. The laboratory covers a floor space of 1750 square meters, equipped with various experimental equipment and instruments. At the moment, we have 27 permanent research staff together with 50 temporary researchers and visiting scholars. The research staff comprises researchers in the fields of modern optics, electronics, computer technology and precision machinery, including 14 professors, 13 associate professors and senior engineers.

II. Main Directions and features of Research

1. The R & D of optics/mechanics/electronics/computer integrated measuring Instruments: including super-precision measurement and corresponding apparatus for geometrical and physical quantities: automatic, intelligent and on-line test systems and instruments. Photo-electronic systems and devices for micromachining; high-resolution optical systems and optical image processing.

2. The study of optical thin film technology: including studies of the relationship among the technological parameters, the microstructure and the macro-performance of optical thin films, computer-aided techniques in design and fabrication of optical coatings. Ion-beam assisted deposition.

3. The study of radiation measurement and spectrum technique: including the R & D of new luminosity and chromatically instruments for industrial use and Fourier transformation Raman spectrometry and the development of 3-D display technology.

4. The study on laser and nonlinear optics: including multi-spectrum/wide tuning laser; high-brightness, high-stability, high-beam-quality and long-life lasers, waveguide lasers, fiber-optic lasers and solid-state lasers with lasers diodes as pump source, nonlinear optics and corresponding technology.

5. High-tech advanced researches in Optics and Electromagnetic. Ongoing research activities include integrated Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM; mainly based on the technologies of etched diffraction gratings and arrayed waveguide gratings), novel photon crystal-based communication devices, localization of epileptic foci in human brains, detection of breast cancer at an earlier stage, reduction of radar cross section, and designs of the novel Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), etc.
