In order to broaden students’ horizon, improve their communicative ability and international competitiveness, Zhejiang University has established all kinds of cooperative relationships with more than 100 universities and academic institutions in more than 10 countries. It has set up special funds for undergraduate student international exchange programs. In 2006, around 600 students participated in more than 30 students international exchange programs.

Exchange programs generally fall into 4 types:
1. credit programs,
2. short-term courses and academic research exchange programs such as collaborative research projects and academic conferences,
3. interschool cultural exchange programs,
4.internships in corporations.

The main exchange programs are listed as follows:

- MELTON Fund program which enables students to study in universities in America, Germany, Chile or India
- IAESTE program which enables students to pursue practicum from two to twelve months in universities, institutes or companies in Germany, England, Norway, France, Austria, Finland, Spain, etc.
- Elite Cultivation Program which sends 50 students for a three-week culture exchange in England or America every year
- Students exchange programs in universities in Hong Kong
- Short-term and long-term interuniversity exchange programs
- Summer vacation exchange programs with universities in Hong Kong
- Summer vacation internships abroad
