International College 
The International College
of Zhejiang University is a special teaching and administrative unit
responsible for the enrollment and placement of international students.
There are at present more than 1,000 international students from over
90 countries throughout the world in the university. The college itself
runs an undergraduate program of Chinese Studies in addition to various
long and short-term programs of the Chinese language and culture. With
students from a great number of nationalities, the college is virtually
a miniature international community, which offers the students good opportunities
to understand and experience different cultures.
Academic Programs for International Students:
Undergraduate, master-level and doctoral programs in a wide
range of disciplines, with courses offered in both English and Chinese;
Undergraduate programs of Chinese Studies, including the Chinese Language,
culture, economics and law;
Chinese language and culture programs for international learners;
Short-term (from 1 week to 3 months) programs for group or individual
learners, catering for different deeds of international students/visitors,
with courses of the Chinese language, culture, economics, traditional
medicine, agriculture, etc. offered in Chinese or English, accompanied
by field-study activities such as sightseeing, visits to factories, business
companies or educational institutions.
Chinese Language and Culture Programs
Degree Programs:
1. Undergraduate Program of Chinese Studies (with Focus on Economics
and Trade)
A 4-year bachelor-degree program which gives students systematic
training in all Chinese language skills, enables them to have a good mastery
of the Chinese language as well as a good understanding of China and Chinese
culture and helps them to lay a solid foundation for further study of
China and the Chinese language or for exchange and cooperation with China.
Main courses: basic Chinese, intermediate
Chinese, advanced Chinese, listening, speaking, translation, writing,
modern Chinese grammar, a survey to China, spoken and written Chinese
for international trade, Chinese cultural history, foreign trade in China,
China's foreign-trade laws, etc.
Non-degree Programs:
1. Preparatory Language Courses for Non-Language
Students
Preparatory language courses are offered by the International
College to improve the Chinese language proficiency of non- language students
before they begin studying their desired specialties in other schools
or departments.
2. Programs of the Chinese Language and Culture
Each semester, the International College organizes language-teaching
classes at elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. Students are
to be placed in classes that suit them best by taking a proficiency test.
A class is usually composed of 15-20 students. The spring semester starts
around mid-February and the fall semester in mid-September. A semester
usually consists of 18 weeks. Each week students may have 20 class hours
of language courses and there are also 10 elective courses for students
to choose from. Field trips are arranged once or twice each semester.
3. Short-Term Chinese Language and Culture Programs
The college also runs short-term programs for groups of international
students all year round. Courses can be specially designed upon request.
Individual short-term students are accepted with no time restriction and
are to be placed in appropriate classes if he/she has studied Chinese
Language for at least 200 hours.

D. Fieldwork
Program-related field trips, including visits, tours, interviews, sightseeing,
are to be organized once or twice each semester for long-term students.
Student Services, Facilities and Surroundings
1. Students are expected to live in the International Students Dormitory,
where single and twin rooms are available. At present, room conditions
vary in dormitories of different campuses. Almost every room is equipped
with central heating facilities and a telephone set. Most rooms have private
shower bath and toilet, some are installed with air-conditioners. Language
labs, self-study rooms, reading rooms, game rooms, E-mail terminal, public
kitchens and washing machines are also accessible to students in the dormitory.
A new international students dormitory capable of holding 500 students
is now under rapid construction on the Yuquan Campus and will be completed
by the end of 1999, in which most rooms will be single rooms, together
with twin rooms and family apartments. As a self-contained building, it
has classrooms, conference rooms, multimedia labs, multifunction halls,
a lobby bar and a gymnasium.
2. A dining-hall is adjacent to the International Students Dorm, where
one can have very nice meals at the cost of only 2 to 4 US dollars per
day. The University has also on all its campuses convenient and inexpensive
canteens where a good variety of Chinese and Western foods are served.
3. Every campus of Zhejiang University has a clinic, where international
students can get medical service at low cost.
4. On campus there are a lot of sports and recreational places as well
as diversified student clubs for extracurricular activities.
5. Partial scholarship or room rent discount can be offered for international
students who take part in on-campus or off-campus foreign language teaching
programs for Chinese students organized by the University.
6. The University campuses enjoy tranquil and convenient surroundings.
All kinds of daily necessities are provided in the off-campus supermarkets
at low price. Post offices and banks are all near the main gate of each
campus. Bus routes connect all campuses with downtown, scenic spots and
the train station.

Wuxie Waterfall, Yaolin Fairyland, Mogan Hill, Wuzhen Town).
12. Holiday travel (for reference: Beijing, Xi'an, Guilin, Yunnan, Three
Gorges, Huangshan Mountain, Thousand-island Lake, Putuo Buddhist Hill,
etc.).
