The Fifth International Symposium on Fluid Power Transmission and Control Held in Zhejiang University

The Fifth International Symposium on Fluid Power Transmission and Control was held in Zhejiang University on April . Over 120 scientists from China, Germany, Finland, the USA, French, Japan made exchanges and discussions about the basic research, techniques of hydraulic pressure, innovation in the industrial application of hydrodynamics. Chairman of the conference, Lu Yongxiang, President of Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a speech in the opening ceremony and also gave a special report.

The first conference on fluid power transmission and control in Zhejiang University was held in 1985. From then on, it has been held every 4 years and become an important conference known as "one of the three most important conferences in this field" among the international colleagues. The discipline of Fluid Power Transmission and Control and Equipment Automation in Zhejiang University is a "five-star " discipline with the titles of national key discipline, national important lab, national technical engineering center, post doctorate mobile research station and national licensed unit for awarding doctor's degree. Its researches in theories and controlling software meets the international advanced standards and so Zhejiang University is known as one of "the international centers of hydraulic pressure "in the world.

Recently, with the development of material science, micro-electronic technology and related disciplines and people's increasing awareness of the problems of energy and environment, the researchers of fluid power transmission and control technology have met a new opportunity and discovered new tasks for the theoretical research and the technological development in the field. Among the over 120 papers presented in the international conference, a great proportion are the discussion and exchanges on the adoption of new materials (e.g. pottery) and micro-motors as well as the research of abrasion and noise when using water to substitute oil in the field of hydraulic pressure. These papers represent the developing trend in this field.
