Discipline Construction " Easy " at Zhejiang University
September 5, 2001

[University Weekly in Science and Technology Daily of June 2nd] For a key comprehensive university, 120 million RMB investment is not much to spend in 5 years on constructing and developing 18 key majors. However, limited investment has played an important role at Zhejiang University. After five year's development, Zhejiang University's 18 discipline construction projects approved by National Planning Commission have all reached satisfactory results.

According to Project 211, Zhejiang University takes 6 discipline clusters as a theme of construction, which are in the fields of chemical engineering, photoelectric information technology and instrument engineering, biomedicine engineering, liquid transmission and automation of equipment, electrical and electronic technology, semiconductor materials and function materials as well as 5 key majors, which are computer-aided design and computer graphics, etc. Building projects have been finished and accepted in the last two years.

Researchers aim at outstanding targets and try to make Zhejiang University a first-rank international university. Utilizing multi-disciplinary advantages resulting from combination of 4 universities, professors of biomedicine engineering at Zhejiang University formed a multi-disciplinary research team for traditional Chinese medicine in separating, analyzing and filtering of recipes. Cooperation with professors of science, engineering, agriculture, medicine will make Zhejiang University an important base for developing our Chinese biomedicines. In semiconductor materials and function materials Zhejiang University amalgamated all scientific disciplines relating to material researches. A research center was established for brilliant talents cultivating, basic research, and industrial development.

National Research Center for Application of Electricity and Electronics has manufactured "high-frequency high-power electricity and electronics system test-bed" and "high-power reversible divisible AC transmission test-bed" up to international standards.

Investment in "Project 211" has promoted the construction of a digital campus at Zhejiang University. The Intranet has become an important channel for teaching and science information communication between the university and local community. The 54-kilometer-long campus network covering Hangzhou City and connecting 5 campuses has more than 20,000 users. With courseware and multimedia as their cores, network teaching systems, network disciplines communication and data-sharing systems, and virtual office systems will brighten the prospect of application of campus network.
