October 29 hailed the opening ceremony of the across-the-strait seminar on micro-systems. This is the second academic exchange in this field since the previous successful seminars held in Taiwan in 2000. Scientists from Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China met in Zhejiang University, and exchanged their latest development in the front field of micro-systems. Since the naissance of the silicon micro-pressure sensor, the silicon micro-static machinery and the micro artificial satellite in 1960s, the field of micro-systems has undergone exciting developments as well as met pressing challenges. Three years ago, under the proposal of Wong Zhengyi, the then president of Chenggong University, and Pan Yunhe, president of Zhejiang University, the faculties of these two universities began their academic exchange on micro-systems. Today, this event has extended beyond the initial two universities and covers many research institutes across the strait. The scientists present at the seminar are mainly from Zhejiang University, Chonggong University, Hong Kong Science and Technology University, Tsing-hua University and China Academy of Science. The fifty research papers adopted covered the various subjects of, among many others, micro-analytic system, micro-electronic machinery, and micro-platform. Under special invitation, Professor Fang Zhaolun from Zhejiang University, also a national academician, made the opening report. He introduced the major research development in Zhejiang University, and analyzed the obstacles in establishing an ideal chip laboratory. These obstacles, he maintained, largely remain in such areas as micro processing, the chip price, and the level and efficiency of micro-integration. The successful solution to these problems requires collective efforts of the scientists and experts in all the related subjects. Finally, he also introduced several approaches to and the latest development in achieving micro-integration. Professor Wong Zhengyi from Taiwan Industrial Technology Institute and Professor Chen Zhenghao from HK Science and Technology University also addressed the seminar.
