The Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) of Zhejiang
University, one of the key social science research centers funded by
the Chinese Ministry of Education, is organizing an International Symposium
on Food Safety: Consumer, Trade, and Regulation Issues. It is co-sponsored
by the Department of Rural Economy of the University of Alberta, Canada,
the Institute of Agriculture and Forestry of the University of Tsukuba,
Japan, and
the
Journal of Chinese Rural Economy.
Location:
Zhejiang University is the largest university in China and located in
a beautiful West Lake, Hangzhou.
Hangzhou is about one and half hours drive away from Shanghai
Pudong International Airport.

Rising domestic consumer food safety concerns in China along with the
recent headlines on the detention and refusal of the Chinese food products
entering the exporting markets such as Japan and European have made
the topic of food safety one of the most dynamic areas in the Chinese
agricultural and food markets.
Rigorous studies on the food safety issues related to consumer,
trade, and regulation cross countries may yield important policy implications
for the Chinese policy makers and may provide the world business and
academic communities with helpful insights into China's agricultural
and food market. We are
particularly interested in the studies which can (1) provide better
understanding of the consumer preference towards food safety issues,
(2) further our understanding on the operation of the current food safety
system in various countries and identify lessons from other countries
which may be applicable to the Chinese food safety regulation reform,
(3) explore possibilities and mechanisms of formulating modern food
safety system, and (4) provide better understanding of trade disputes
related to food safety around the world. Contact:
