The First International Conference on Embedded Software and System (ICESS 2004) Was Held

The First International Conference on Embedded Software and System (ICESS 2004) was held at Zhejiang University during December 9 to 10, 2004. Marvelous progresses have been achieved in research and development of embedded systems recent years. Embedded system technologies are more and more widely used in automobile, telecommunication, aerial products, and so on. Under such circumstances, Hi-Tech Research and Development Program of China (also known as the 863 Program), China Computer Federation and Zhejiang University decided to host this conference. The general co-chairs are Prof. Xiangke Liao, director of expert team of 863 Program focusing on software, and Prof. Chun Chen, deputy dean of College of Computer Science, Zhejiang University. The program co-chairs are Prof Zhaohui Wu, vice-dean of College of Computer Science, Zhejiang University, and Dr. Ranfun Chiu, principal scientist of HP Labs. This is the first time for China to hold such an exciting and attractive international conference on embedded system research.

The review for papers had been done by the program and technical committees. The committee members are experts and scholars in embedded systems from 15 countries and regions. There are totally over 400 papers from more than 20 countries submitted to the conference, of which 106 papers have been selected for publication. The proceedings of the main conference will be published as Lecture Notes in Computer Science by Springer Verlag. The papers cover many areas, such as distributed embedded computing, sensor networks, embedded operating systems, middleware of embedded computing. This conference can be regarded as an important conclusion of advances on embedded system research as well as an impressing forecasting for the future directions of development.

This conference also invited Professor Bjarne Stroustrup, the father of C++, Professor Alexander Stepanov, the STL (Standard Template Library) inventor and principal scientist of Adobe, and Professor Laurence T. Yang from University of St. Francis Xavier, Canada, to make keynote presentations. The conference not only brought a heated feedback from the academic area, but also arouses the intense interests of many famous enterprises, such as Intel Corporation, China Putian Corporation, Hopen Software Eng. Co. Ltd., ZTE Corporation, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and CoreTek Systems Incorporated. The exciting speeches and exhibitions from enterprises made the conference even more attractive.
