International Chinese Mathematicians Will Gather at Zhejiang University March 29, 2007
In the afternoon of March 28, 2007, Professor Shing-Tung Yau, Harvard University and the Center of Mathematical Sciences, Zhejiang University, announced a piece of news that the 4th International Congress on Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) will be held at Zhejiang University from December 17 to 23, 2007. On that occasion, there will be probably 1500 participants from all over the world attending the event, including international renowned mathematician and Father of Ricci Flow Richard Hamilton. The congress will firstly set up awards for excellent Chinese undergraduate students, and encourage them striving to overtake world-class research in mathematics. The triennial congress was initiated in 1998, and previous three congresses were successfully held in Beijing (1998), Taipei (2001) and Hong Kong (2004), respectively. At coming ceremony, they will issue Morningside Medal of Mathematics Awards, Shiing-Shen Chern Prize, and International Cooperation Prize. Their aim is to encourage Chinese mathematicians who have made outstanding achievements in mathematics, and person who have made significant contributions for Chinese development in mathematics. The congress will set up firstly awards for young students, to award three doctoral papers, three Master’s papers, and six Bachelor’s papers, respectively. During the congress, there will be more than 20 foreign scientists giving keynote lectures, introducing frontiers and hotspots of international mathematics to audiences, apart from reports to represent 200 Chinese scientists. The foreign scientists are: Professor Richard Hamilton, academician of American Academy of Science, and professor of Colombia University, USA, Professor John Coates, a fellow of the Royal Society, UK, and chair professor of Univ. of Cambridge, Professor Smith,academician of American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and professor of Harvard University, and etc. The well-known Scientist Stephen Hawking will be on invitation list. Meanwhile there will be a series of public lectures. |
