President: Academician Yang Wei 


Professor YANG Wei was born on February 16, 1954, in Beijing, China. He completed his undergraduate study at Northwestern Polytechnic University in December 1976, received his MS degree from Department of Engineering Mechanics, TsinghuaUniversity in April 1981, and Ph.D. degree from Division of Engineering, Brown University, USA, in June 1985. He was promoted to the rank of full professor in December 1989, as the youngest professor in Tsinghua University then.

In December 1993, Professor Yang was appointed as the Director of the Failure Mechanics Laboratory of the Ministry of Education in China. He served as the Department Head of Engineering Mechanics from 1997 to 2004, and the Executive Dean of Aerospace School from May to September of 2004 at Tsinghua University. From 1999 to 2004, he was endowed as a Yangtze Professor of the Chinese Ministry of Education. He chaired the Academic Committee of Tsinghua University from April 2004 to August 2006. From September 2004 to July 2006, he served as the Director-General of the Academic Degrees Committee of State Council of China, and also as the Head of Directorate of Graduate Education in the Ministry of Education in China. Since August 2006, he has taken the position of the President of Zhejiang University.


In 2001, Professor Yang was elected as a foreign member of the
Russian Academy of Astronautics. He was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2003, and elected by its members in 2008 as the head of the Technological Science Division. Professor Yang became a member of TWAS in 2004. He has been invited to be guest professors and scientists in many leading universities in USA, UK, France, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan.


Professor Yang’s other honors and awards include the “May Fourth Youth Medal” from Beijing Municipal Government and the Chinese Youth Award of Science and Technology in 1988, the State Council Special Government Allowance in 1992, the National Excellent Teacher Award in 1993 as one of the 10 best teachers nominated by Beijing Municipal Government, the Chinese Young Scientists Award and the title of “National Young and Mid-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions” in 1994, and the National Mayday Medal in 2002. Recipient of the 2008 Award for Mathematics and Mechanics by Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation.
Professor Yang’s current academic services include Council Member of China Association of Science and Technology, Convener of the Mechanics Discipline-appraising Group of the Academic Degrees Committee, and Specially-invited Board Member of Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. Internationally, Professor Yang is on the General Assembly of International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and serves as the Chairman of Far East and Oceanic Fracture Society (2004-2008). He is one of the four regional editors of Composite Science and Technology, the international journal with the highest IF in the field of composite materials. He serves in other editorial boards of international journals such as Int. J Fracture, Fatigue & Fract. Eng. Mats. & Structs., J. Mech. Phys. Solids, Modeling Simu. Mater. Sci. Eng. and Archives Appl. Mech.


As an educator, Professor Yang has been elected in several key positions in various organizations of higher learning institutions. He is the Interim Chair of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU). He is the Chairman of the Union of Research Universities in
China (including 9 leading research universities in the mainland and 3 leading research universities in Hong Kong). He is also the Asia-Pacific Chair of Global University Network of Innovation (GUNI).

Professor Yang has made important contributions in the fields of Fracture Mechanics, Mechatronic Reliability, and Micro/Nanomechanics. He has authored and co-authored 11 books and 189 technical papers in internationally refereed journals with more than 1600 citations in SCI.


   

Standing Vice-President : Scientific Research, Experimentation Equipment, Procurement & Supervision

Professor Zhaohui Wu was born on December 18, 1966, in Wenzhou, China. He received the Ph.D. degree from Zhejiang University in 1993. From 1991 to 1993, he was with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) as a joint Ph.D. student. He was a visiting professor of the University of Arizona. He is a vice-president of Zhejiang University and the Director of the Institute of Computer System and Architecture. He is deputy head of the Expert Group of Modern Service Industry Project, a member of the IT Expert Committee for the National 863 program, a senior member of the IEEE, a standing council member of China Computer Federation. His research interests include intelligent system, semantic grid, and ubiquitous embedded systems. Prof. Wu has authored 4 books and more than 100 refereed papers. He is on the editorial boards of several journals, and has served as PC member for various international conferences.
 

 

   

Vice-President : Undergraduate and Graduate Education, & Continuing Education


Professor Lai Maode was born on August 21, 1960, in Hangzhou, China. He graduated from Zhejiang Medical University with bachelor degree of medicine in December 1982, and received MS degree in Zhejiang Medical University in July 1987, and MD degree in Luebeck Medical University in Germany in December 1990. He is a professor of pathology (since 1994). He served as vice president of Zhejiang Medical University from November 1996 to August 1998. Since September 1998 he has been appointed as vice president of Zhejiang University. Professor Lai is committed to teaching and research, and he has received many awards for his research and scholarly writing. He is the author of more than one hundred articles in professional and scholarly journals. As a scientist, Professor Lai is Chairman of Chinese Society of Pathology, Vice President of Chinese Association of Pathologist, Vice Chairman of Committee of Colorectal Cancer Society, Chinese Anti-cancer Association and Vice Chairman of National Committee of Medical Education of Basic Sciences.

Professor Jian Chu was born in April 1963 at Zhejiang Province. He graduated at Department of Chemical Engineering in 1982 and received MS degree at Zhejiang University in 1984. From 1986 to 1989, he studied at Kyoto University in Japan, and completed his PhD thesis there. He received a PhD degree from Zhejiang University in early 1989. Since then, he worked for postdoctoral research at the Institute of Industrial Process Control of Zhejiang University. From 1991, he joined in Zhejiang University as a faculty member. In February 2005, he was appointed as Vice President of Zhejiang University. His research fields are control theory and its applications, R & D of computer control systems and advanced process control software. He is Director of State Key Laboratory of Industrial Control Technology, Deputy Director of National Engineering Research Center for Industrial Automation, Director of Institute of Cyber-System and Control, and Vice President of Chinese Association of Instrumentation.  


    

 Vice-President : Development and Planning, International Affair & Foreign Student Education

Wu Ping is a Professor of Plant Science at College of Life Science, Zhejiang University. He received his BS and MS from the former Zhejiang Agriculture University in 1982 and 1988. He received his PhD from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines in 1993 and spent one year at IRRI for his postdoctoral research before joining the Zhejiang Agriculture University in 1994. From 1996 to 1998, he conducted research work at Texas A&M as a visiting scholar. In 2000 and 2002, he spent short periods for collaboration with Cornell University and Yale University, respectively. From 1999 to 2008, he was acting as deputy dean of College of Life Science, Zhejiang University. From 2007 to 2009, he was appointed as President Assistant before he is assigned as vice President of Zhejiang University. His current work focuses on molecular physiology underlying nutrient uptake and use efficiency in rice, identification and characterization of genes that enhance the nutrient uptake and use efficiency, and root development in rice.
