The 2nd Affiliated Hospital

Standing proudly in the vicinity of the beautiful West Lake is the 2nd Affiliated Hospital , Zhejiang University. School of Medicine. Founded in 1869,the hospital, which grew out of the C.M.S.Hospital, was one of the first in China that specialized in Western medicine.

The hospital's current development in leaps and bounds is the culmination of the labors by more than one generation. Today it has grown into a hospital with complete disciplines, strong technical potentials, up- to- date equipment and excellent health care facilities. With more than 1,076 patient beds, the hospital comprised 26 department of clinical medicine and 12 units of medical technical service. Among its staff, nearly 300 have titles of senior professional posts .In 1984, the hospital was cited as the provincial-level hospital with high credit and it was one of the first in the country that was appraised as a Class A hospital in the tertiary health care system in 1989. In 1991, the hospital was chosen as an advanced unit within the national health organizations and in 1994 it was held up as a national model by Ministry of Public Health for its well-controlled in hospital infection. In 1998, the hospital was ranked in the top 100 hospitals in China and an exemplary hospital in culture and ethics in Zhejiang Province.

In delivering health care, the hospital places top priority on its patients. The hospital annually receives as many as 1 million patients' visits for clinic and emergency while the inpatients average 20,000 person-times per year. The hospital is well spoken of for its trauma surgery, diagnosing and treating cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and cancer prevention and therapy. An in-hospital and regional first-aid system is established for emergency and critical care service. With a wealth of experience accumulated through years, the hospital is most skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of difficult and complex cases and also in the emergency care for patients with composite-type trauma. Advanced diagnostic and medical equipment of world level such as MRI, the linear accelerator, the X-ray knife, ECT, CT and DSA have been introduced in succession. With every approach available, such as the welcoming and comfortable hospital environment, the 24-hour-open service, the duly shortened hospitalization stay and the practiced holistic nursing, the hospital offers the best health care and the high-quality service to its patients.

Focusing on its development in a most substantial way by means of science and education, the hospital has done much to promote its research work on clinical medicine and bring together professionals from multidisciplinary areas to work in tandem to tackle priority medical problems. Multiple achievements lead way in the country and even reach the world level. With great importance attached to the training of talents, the hospital offers post-doctor training program for clinical medicine, 6 doctoral programs with 18 tutors and 18 master-degree programs with 95 tutors. The hospital, featuring a strong academic atmosphere, stresses the importance of advancing and broadening knowledge, aims high academically and strengthens its multidisciplinary areas. The oncology, surgery, ophthalmology neurology and neurosurgery , etc. in this hospital are identified as key projects of the province or the university . The in-hospital establishment of the national base for clinical pharmacological studies and the 5 quality- control centers for the province-wide clinical care have greatly promoted its health care quality and elevated the technical skills.

Since the implementation of reform and opening- up policy, the hospital has been actively engaging in academic exchanges on health care with colleagues both at home and abroad. Collaborative affiliations have been forged with more than 10 countries, among which are the United States, Germany, Japan, France, Australia and others. Over the last 20 years, the hospital has sent 295 people abroad to study and visit. Visitors from over seas tallies to more than 320 groups . In addition, the hospital also offers refresher courses for foreign students. To aid some Asian and African countries , the hospital has sent health care specialists to work there.
