Women's Hospital

Women's Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University serves as a center for obstetric and gynecologic care, teaching, scientific research, family planning and women's health care for Zhejiang Province. It is a station of graduate students for master and doctorate degrees in Gynecology and Obstetrics. The hospital has 15733.4 square meters of area.

The hospital has 500 beds, and 740 staff members including 94 senior doctors (professors, chief physicians, associate professors, or associate chiefphysicians). It treats about 400,000 outpatients and 15,000 inpatients each year and includes the following departments: Gynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, Infertile Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University serves as a center for obstetric and gynecologic care, teaching, scientific research, family planning and women's health care.

The hospital is a pioneer in gynecologic plastic surgery in China, especially the creation of an artificial vagina from peritoneum. The hospital also is prominent in the study of endometriosis and in endoscopy. Since the first laparoscopy for gynecologic disease was performed in the hospital in 1978, thousands of patients have undergone laparoscopy or hysteroscopy .

The Department of Gynecologic Oncology was founded in 1971. Several hundred thousand patients with various types of gynecologic tumors have been treated in the department. The department is one of the national leaders in the clinical and basic studies of gynecologic tumors, especially trophoblastic diseases and ovarian cancer.

Assisted reproductive technology, including in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET) and gamete intro-fallopian transfer (GIFT), have been successfully performed at the hospital on numerous infertile women. This technology filled a gap in assisted reproductive technology in Zhejiang Province. In recent years, selective embryo reduction, frozen and thawed embryo transfer, and intracytoplasma sperm injection(ICSI) have been successfully performed, which bring fortunes to infertile patients.

The Department of Obstetrics is one of the leaders in perinatal medicine and research. China's first fetal monitor and fetal electrocardiograph were designed and produced in the department, and central fetal monitoring, fetal sound stimulation, umbilical artery flow monitoring, and color ultrasound also were carried out very early. In recent years, the department has been applying fetal intrauterine therapy and the painless delivery model. Because of its effort to promote breast-feeding, the hospital was one of the first to be named a "Baby Friendly Hospital" by UNICEF and the Ministry of Public Health of China.

The Department of Neonatology is responsible for the medical care of high-risk infants in the intensive care nursery and postnatal wards, and neonatal resuscitation in delivery rooms. The department has good monitoring and treating facilities, being able to offer 24-hour intensive care services for high-risk babies every day, especially for premature and low birth weight infants.

The Department of Family Planning has focused on the study on intrauterine contraceptive devices and the contraceptive pill for two decades and brought them to a higher level in the country. Rich experience has been accumulated in the treatment of complicated contraceptive problems and complications of tubal sterilization surgery. Surgery for reanastomosis of fallopian tubes has achieved a success rate of nearly 100 percent. The department was the first in china to reimplant a fallopian tube into the uterine cornu to treat infertility caused by blockage of the tube near the cornu.

In the past 20 years, the hospital has established academic or other cooperative relationships with hospitals in more than 10 countries and regions, including the United States, Japan, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Since 2000, the sister hospital relationship with Mater Mothers' Hospital, Queensland, Australia has been established, and varieties of academic exchanges and cooperation between the two hospitals have been successfully performed.
