Vision 20 Held at ZJU

“Vision 20: International Summit on Global Governance’s New Frontier” (Vision 20) was held between March 31 and April 1 at Zhejiang  University. Present at the summit were more than 50 eminent scholars, think-tank leaders and government leaders from various countries and regions, including China, Canada, the USA, Australia, Japan, Korea, the UK, India and Indonesia. ZJU President Wu Zhaohui attended the opening ceremony.

“The G20 is set to be held in Hangzhou this year. I hope that Vision 20 will open a window of opportunity for fruitful discussions on global governance,” said Wu Zhaohui, “ZJU has long been committed to promoting the development of China and the whole world by providing new voices and thoughts. We will strive for new breakthroughs, thus rendering more support in the development of China and the globe.”

Ms. Cindy Termorshuizen, Deputy Head of Mission at the Canadian Embassy in China, lauded the contributions of the G20 to the global economic development. Meanwhile, she stressed that there remains a long way to go for the G20 and recommended that scrupulous attention be paid to supervision over the financial industry globally, thereby promoting the exuberant and balanced development of the whole world.

    Paul Martin, former Prime Minister of Canada and the forefather of the G20, delivered his congratulatory speech via a video, in which he pointed out that every country in the world should transcend its own national benefit, establish multi-lateral mechanisms and re-define the theme of G20, thus benefiting every citizen in the world.

Chen Hongying, Hangzhou’s Vice Mayor, said that Hangzhou is one of the most economically dynamic cities in China and that Internet-based economy is not only a vital manifestation of Hangzhou’s economic development, it also mirrors the future trend of the world economy.

Pascal Lamy, former WTO Director-General, Lin Yifu, former Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of the World Bank, Colin Bradford, Nonresident Senior Fellow of the Brookings Institution in Washington, Miles Kahle, Senior Fellow for Global Governance at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, delivered keynote speeches at the summit.

Vision 20 was jointly organized by ZJU’s School of Public Affairs, the Institute of Asian Research of the University of British  Columbia and the Munk School of Global Affairs of the University of Toronto. It was focused on “Improving Global Governance and Addressing Systemic Risk: How Can the G20 Take a Proactive Role in 2016?”. There were 6 panels as follows: “Uncovering Structural Impediments to Growth and Fostering Innovation”, “Sustainable Development and Infrastructure”, “Regional and Global Trading System: The Way Forward”, “International Financial Reforms—the Next Stage”, “Ecological Governance—Energy and climate (including green financing)—post COP 21” and “The Future of the Global Monetary System and the Role of the RMB”.
