KTH Students Conduct Optical Physics Projects at ZJU

2017-10-17

Starting from June 25, 17 undergraduates from KTH Royal Institute of Technology conducted optical physics projects at Zhejiang University for three weeks. This is the  second year that the ZJU’s College of Optical Science and Engineering  has organized the summer research program. The program is carried out  under the Joint Research Centre of Photonics, a collective force of the  world-class research teams on photonics from ZJU, KTH, and the  University of Rochester.

During their stay in ZJU, these students with major on Engineering Physics were assigned to nine ZJU research groups on Yuquan and Zijingang campuses, in which they were exposed to a wide range of photonics-related projects, including imaging techniques, micro-angiography, and fluorescence of optical fiber temperature sensors. Supervised by ZJU professors and assisted by several Ph.D. students, the Swedish students made full use of computer simulation software to explore project results.

In the final week, each project was examined through a paper written in the style of a scientific report, covering the most relevant theoretical background as well as the project results. In addition, all groups gathered on the final day to present their specific work, with one group winning the Best Group Award. To top it all off, a joyful farewell dinner was held on the same night.

Gustav Ekman from Stockholm said the program had deepened his understanding of Chinese people, life, and culture and enlightened him on future study.

Aside from an exciting football match, students from both universities had a memorable tour around the picturesque city of Hangzhou at the weekend. Intoxicated with the views of West Lake, Lingyin Temple, and other historical sites, they spent a good time experiencing the unique charm and beauty of the city.

This October, 13 ZJU students will pay a return visit to KTH and participate in “Engineering Physics for ZJU @KTH”, a one-week program specially designed for students from ZJU.
