MIT Technology Review names DI Dawei to the global list of “Innovators Under 35”
Today, MIT Technology Review announced its annual list of Innovators Under 35 (global). ZJU’s Dr. DI Dawei is named on the prestigious list as an Inventor. Every year, a list of exceptionally talented technologists whose work has great potential to transform the world are awarded.
DI has been awarded for his contributions to the research and development of next-generation energy-efficient display and lighting technologies, including organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and perovskite light-emitting diodes (perovskite LEDs). His research led to efficiency records for low-cost, solution-processed OLEDs and perovskite LEDs.
In the field of OLEDs, DI co-discovered and demonstrated a high-efficiency light emission mechanism associated with exciton spin-state degeneracy in rotatable carbene-metal-amide molecules; in the field of perovskite LEDs, his work identified the primary reasons that limit the light emission efficiency, and successfully minimized the energy losses caused by non-radiative processes.

Having earned two PhD degrees from the University of New South Wales and the University of Cambridge, DI’s international academic experience has contributed greatly to his research. “I would like to thank my PhD and postdoc supervisor at Cambridge, Professor Sir Richard Friend (the Cavendish Professor of Physics), and my collaborators, Dr. Alex Romanov, Dr. Le Yang, Dr. Baodan Zhao, Prof. Manfred Bochmann, Dr. Dan Credgington, Prof. Mikko Linnolahti and Prof. Judith Driscoll for their important contributions to the research work recognized by this award. Also I’m very grateful to my family and friends, as well as to my PhD supervisors at UNSW, including Prof. Martin Green and Prof. Gavin Conibeer, who provided much support during my academic career.”
Currently a principal investigator at ZJU’s College of Optical Science and Engineering and a visiting researcher at the University of Cambridge, DI strives to explore new frontiers in optoelectronics with his fellow researchers. “At Zhejiang University, we continue to work with the best people on a new generation of optoelectronics and the related device physics, and hope the research we do can improve the world around us.”
Before being honored on the global list of MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 (2019), DI was named an Innovator Under 35 in China (2018). He will also join other recipients to be celebrated at the EmTech MIT conference in September this year, the 20th anniversary of EmTech.
