Thanks for Becoming a volunteer of the Hangzhou Asian Games

2023-10-31

It's no exaggeration to say that if I had given up taking part in the volunteer experience for the Hangzhou Asian Games, I would regret it to death! The recently concluded Asian Games have created so many brilliant moments in my life, which will fill me with joy every time I think back.

The communication between people was definitely a wonder. People, grown in totally different cultural backgrounds, shared views and experiences, and it felt like magic that despite differences in skin and language, we could still feel close to each other.

I remember a lovely American journalist who spoke Chinese well coming to our help desk. After we solved his problem, he kindly said xiexie to us and began to share his experience of learning Chinese. The most appealing part was when he traveled to Qingdao, and the locals taught him to order beer by saying “喝冰的啤酒” (which means drink a bottle of iced beer). This has now become his most familiar Chinese sentence.

Another impressive journalist from Bangladesh made a video call to his twin sons and let them say hi to us. It was such a magical scene; we stood in Hangzhou but communicated with the whole world. In their gentle smiles and enthusiastic sharings, I seemed to sense a strong spiritual happiness, which came from a wonderful feeling about the world and cultural differences.

When it comes to the most impressive moment, it must be the night of the opening ceremony. Actually, it wasn't a very nice day for me because I was so tired from the skyrocketing number of people and questions. However, when everyone gathered in the hall of the Main Media Center, counting down together and watching the cybertorchbearer light the Olympic flame, I almost burst into tears. A sense of pride sprang up, coming from the realization that it was held where I have been living, and I was also a part of it behind the scenes.

In addition, the Hangzhou Asian Games also feature numerous ingenious ideas, such as the small robots delivering newspapers and the brochures made from recycled milk boxes. These elements symbolize the intelligence and commitment to sustainable development in Hangzhou, garnering attention from journalists worldwide. Now, I must say, it's my great honor to be a volunteer for the 19th Asian Games!
