The Experience of a Lifetime: Volunteering for the Asian Para Games

2023-11-02

Life is full of surprises, and sometimes, opportunity knocks when you least expect it. Reflecting on the 18th Asian Games held in Indonesia, my 15-year-old self would not have anticipated that, in just five years, I would be studying abroad in Hangzhou and witnessing the next Asian Games in this paradise-like city.

From just watching sports competitions on television screens, I feel utterly blessed that this time, I was given the chance to become a volunteer for the National Paralympic Committee of Indonesia (NPC Indonesia) at the 4th Asian Para Games Hangzhou 2022. Volunteering has always been something very close to my heart, and being able to make a small contribution to my home country in one of the worlds biggest multi-sports events is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

From October 22-25, my role was to serve as the liaison officer, assisting government officials during their stay in Hangzhou until their departure from Shanghai. Throughout this period, I was primarily responsible for providing translation services and support to Mrs. Angkie Yudistia, the Presidential Special Staff from Indonesia, and accompanying the team from the Ministry of Youth and Sports. My volunteering period concluded on October 28, a day when I guided two government staff members from the Ministry of National Development Planning on a tour of Hangzhou and Wuzhen, showcasing the beauty of China.

These five days have definitely been one of this years highlights, adding vibrant colors to my life as a ZJUer! It was truly a priceless learning experience where I discovered the power of languages and cross-cultural communication in bridging the gap between different nationalities. While working under pressure and dealing with sudden schedule changes, I also learned to embrace adaptability. Looking at it in a broader context, I came to realize the importance of staying agile, especially in todays fast-paced and dynamic world.

As guides and interpreters, we had the privilege of witnessing various sports matches. It brings unparalleled joy and great admiration every time I witness the indomitable spirit of para-athletes breaking records and striving to win medals for their country. They are inspirational heroes who refuse to let disabilities limit their pursuit of dreams. Thus, witnessing their resilience serves as a reminder to always aim for the sky because there are no limitsonly possibilities.

This is my rendition of 'the experience of a lifetime.' I am beyond grateful for this opportunity, and these golden memories will be forever cherished and remembered.
