A Volunteer Teaching Trip to Xishuangbanna

2024-10-28

As a student at Zhejiang University, our learning has never been confined to textbooks alone. We’ve engaged in various meaningful and socially responsible activities. This summer vacation, I joined the Zhejiang University Teaching Team in Xishuangbanna as a volunteer, where I taught a two-week course to primary school students. Our university has a strong tradition of volunteer service, and I was excited to contribute to the education of young learners in Xishuangbanna.

After more than forty hours on the green train, we finally arrived in Xishuangbanna. Upon arrival, we visited the primary school where we would be teaching, Jinghong Century Jinyuan Primary School, and assigned our classes and subjects. For the next two weeks, I served as the math teacher for Class 2, Grade 3, and the science teacher for the entire Grade 3.

In math class, I worked to transform complex math concepts into real-life examples, using engaging and interesting methods to spark the children's interest in math. When I saw their radiant smiles after solving a difficult problem, my heart filled with joy and a sense of accomplishment. During science class, I shared the history of robotics, explaining various concepts to ignite their curiosity and excitement about future technology. I also taught geography, covering topics from karst landforms to the structure of celestial bodies. From their eager expressions, I could sense their love for learning.

The two weeks of teaching support concluded with a grand performance by students from each class. As I walked out of the school for the last time, I reflected on those two weeks with a deep sense of nostalgia and reluctance. This experience will forever leave a significant mark on my memory. I will remember the beautiful clouds of Xishuangbanna, the friendships with fellow volunteers, and the children’s smiling faces! If I have the opportunity and time, I would eagerly participate in such services again.
