Temple Tour: A Short Escape to Find Life Balance

2024-10-28

Last week, I visited Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou, a place rich in history and spirituality. The ancient Buddha statues carved into the cliffs are truly impressive, showcasing the skill and dedication of craftsmen from hundreds of years ago. The temple was very busy, with people burning incense and offering prayers. I even noticed a long line of mostly young people waiting to buy “Eighteen Seeds,” a bracelet believed to bring good luck. After purchasing them, people placed the bracelets on incense burners to bless them, creating a unique and intriguing scene.

In China, Buddhism has a long history, and temples are considered powerful places to seek blessings. For instance, some believe that prayers for marriage at Faxi Temple are particularly effective. Different deities are also thought to help with specific needs: for good grades, people pray to Manjusri; for health, they seek blessings from the Medicine Buddha; and many couples pray to Samantabhadra for a healthy child. Temples offer people a way to connect with these beliefs and ask for support in their lives.

This experience made me reflect on why so many young people are drawn to temples and spirituality today. It seems that many people feel stressed or anxious, and visiting temples gives them a sense of comfort and hope for good fortune. In fact, a popular saying on Chinese social media is, “Choosing to burn incense over working or studying.” The internet has turned these spiritual practices into a trend, where beliefs in luck and destiny become a shared way of coping with life’s pressures. Personally, every time I visit Lingyin Temple, I feel a deep sense of peace—whether it’s the fresh air or simply my love and trust in this place, it always brings me comfort. Looking forward to better days, I find that a temple tour is truly a wonderful way to find some peace and balance!
