This article delves into the inspiring story of Professor Paul M. Rea from the University of Glasgow, who came to ZJU-ISM, and here will share his reflections on teaching, culture, and the future of academic partnerships.】

Why did Professor Rea choose to collaborate with ZJU-ISM in China?

The story starts with a visit by the Vice Dean of International Affairs CHEN Weiying to the University of Glasgow. There was a need for an anatomy teacher during talks on encouraging academic collaboration and exchange. Acknowledging the potential for development and cross-cultural interaction, the University of Glasgow suggested a highly qualified instructor who was not just an experienced anatomy specialist but also excited about teaching in a global environment.

"After the recommendation, I was invited to Zhejiang University, and the thought of coming to China truly excited me," said the professor. "China's rich cultural history, technical developments have long captivated me. The choice was made much simpler by Zhejiang University, one of the top universities in China. I viewed it as a fantastic chance to see a new academic setting and culture while also contributing to anatomical education."

Thoughts on time at ZJU-ISM

The experience at ZJU-ISM has been nothing short of extraordinary for this dedicated educator. A lasting impression was made by the cutting-edge campus and contemporary amenities. "The campus itself is breathtaking, including contemporary structures that flawlessly combine style and utility. The experience is enhanced by China's rich customs and lively culture.

The professor also highlighted the wonderful help given by the faculty. "The smooth transfer was made possible in large part by Vice Dean CHEN Weiying. She has been a steadfast support system from the beginning. She made sure my visit was not only fruitful but also comfortable and delightful by regularly asking for my feedback. Her commitment made my time in China easier and more enjoyable."

Undoubtedly, the students have been the high point of his stay at ZJU-ISM. "My class is a remarkable one. Students are keen to learn and very enthusiastic. Their curiosity and ability to engage in clinical reasoning and identify anatomical structures with precision have been a source of immense joy for me. It gives me great satisfaction to hear that my lessons are enjoyable. It encourages me to give my all each and every day and reaffirms my passion for teaching."

Creating a vision for upcoming partnerships

The professor is excited to strengthen the relationship between ZJU-ISM and the University of Glasgow in the future. His goals include creating a more dynamic learning environment for students and improving the curriculum to be current in international developments and advances in anatomical education.

"I think working together on digital anatomy instruction and incorporating clinical applications into the curriculum has a lot of potential. These resources have the potential to completely transform anatomy instruction, making it innovative, inspiring, accessible and approachable for students," Professor Rea said.

Additionally, both institutions want to encourage student exchange programs that would expose students from both campuses to other academic approaches and cultural norms. "Student exchanges may offer priceless educational opportunities, expanding their perspectives and cultivating global citizenship. These partnerships, in my opinion, have the potential to strengthen the academic community and benefit all parties."
