A visit to Deshou Palace: Encountering the splendor of the Southern Song Dynasty

2025-01-30

After completing my last final exam, I decided to visit Deshou Palace, a royal residence from the Southern Song Dynasty. One of its most iconic features is a striking red wall, a popular spot for photos. Visitors often pause to capture a memorable picture before entering the palace.

A quick tip: wearing light-colored clothing will make your photos stand out beautifully against the vibrant backdrop!

Admission to Deshou Palace is free—all you need to do is make an online reservation before your visit. Simple and convenient, right?

Stepping inside, I was immediately captivated by the palace’s ambiance. While it isn’t as vast as other palaces, the scenery is truly breathtaking. Deshou Palace also serves as a museum, offering a glimpse into the rich history of the Southern Song Dynasty.

During my visit, a temporary exhibition titled Palace Feast of Deshou was on display. It explored the food culture of the era, featuring traditional culinary utensils and fascinating samples of historical dishes.

Deshou Palace features around ten themed exhibition halls, each showcasing different aspects of the Southern Song Dynasty’s history and culture. The most impressive hall is the one displaying real historical artifacts, where visitors can witness the grandeur of these relics firsthand.

The scale of the exhibit was truly striking, and every item was carefully labeled with detailed explanations to ensure visitors could fully understand its significance. Informational displays were also placed throughout the exhibition hall, making the experience both immersive and educational.

In addition to detailed explanations, the exhibition halls featured interactive visual effects that enriched the experience. By clicking or stepping on specific points, visitors could activate captivating displays that left a lasting impression.

One particularly memorable moment was when I clicked on a random Chinese character, and suddenly, a beautiful poem from the Song Dynasty appeared on the wall, bringing history to life in an enchanting way.

After visiting Deshou Palace, I truly appreciated the beauty of Southern Song architecture and culture. I highly recommend that anyone in Hangzhou take the time to explore this hidden gem. It’s an underrated destination that shouldn’t be missed, perfect for a weekend adventure.
