As a Malaysian student studying in China, I’ve come to realize that studying abroad isn’t just an academic journey—it’s also a challenge that requires adapting both mentally and physically. From adjusting to a new culture to managing academic stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, self-care is essential. In this article, I’d like to share some personal tips that have helped me stay healthy, hoping they might be useful for other international students as well!

1. Adapting to a New Environment: Keep an Open Mind

When I first arrived in China, I struggled with the language barrier and cultural differences. However, I learned to embrace new experiences with an open mind—exploring Chinese culture, trying diverse local foods, and stepping out of my comfort zone to connect with local students. This not only helped me adjust more quickly to campus life but also allowed me to build meaningful friendships.

2. Social Support: Build a Supportive Circle

Being far from home can sometimes feel lonely. To cope with this, I joined student clubs like the Cantonese Club and the International Student Art Group, where I’ve met like-minded friends. I also stay connected with my family through video calls, sharing small moments from my daily life. This helps me feel closer to home, even from miles away.

Whenever I feel overwhelmed with schoolwork, I turn to exercise, music, or journaling to clear my mind. Sometimes, I take a walk around campus—alone or with a friend—to relax and enjoy nature.
