Chinese Aesthetics in my life

2025-06-10

Recently, I’ve found myself captivated by the Chinese aesthetics.

The Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai

Every element herethe decorations, architecture, and even the plantsreflects the vitality of Chinese aesthetics. Yuyuans beauty strikes a perfect balance between elegance and vibrancy, seamlessly blending the refined with the lively.

In the garden, the exquisite bonsai are especially captivating. Though they don’t boast an explosion of blossoms, even a few are enough to infuse the space with rich, layered color—soft pinks, deep reds, warm oranges. Sometimes, just a single shade of red is all it takes to make the whole scene come alive.

Beyond its physical beauty, Yuyuan’s charm lies in an often-overlooked aspect of Chinese aesthetics: the people. I’ve visited Yuyuan three times, and each time I’ve encountered groups of graceful women. Some wear qipao, the traditional Chinese dress that embodies the timeless elegance of the East. Their presence, adorned in flowing silk and subtle patterns, adds a living poetry to the garden—heightening its enchantment and deepening its allure.

The Culture of Miao (an ethnic minority)

Chinese aesthetics would be incomplete without recognizing the unique beauty of each ethnic minority—and the Miao culture is a shining example. During a visit to several Miao villages in southwestern China, I saw men and women of all ages dressed in traditional Miao attire, each garment brimming with a festive spirit. It was captivating! I couldn’t wait to try it on myself. Standing in front of the mirror, adorned in the intricate patterns and vibrant colors, I felt as though I were embodying the beauty of their distinctive cultural heritage.

Perhaps the true charm of Chinese aesthetics lies not only in its visual appeal but also in its ability to connect us with the roots of our culture. It offers a sense of belonging that transcends time. As we appreciate it, we come to realize that each of us plays a part in this tradition—a living thread in the ongoing legacy of Eastern beauty.
