My Enchanting Adventure in the Diverse World of Mushrooms

I'm incredibly excited to share my amazing experience in a general education course at Zhejiang University called "The Diverse World of Mushrooms." This course opened the door to the fascinating world of fungi, offering a wealth of hands-on experiences and insightful learning.

The course began with a hands-on project: making mushroom cultivation bags. Guided step by step by our professor, we prepared the substrate, inoculated it with mushroom spores, and carefully sealed the bags. Bringing them back to our dorms, we watched in awe as tiny white mycelium gradually spread throughout the bags—like nurturing a miniature, hidden ecosystem right at our bedside.

One of the most unforgettable moments was the mushroom-themed food tasting session. The table was filled with a delicious variety of mushroom-based dishes: stir-fried mushrooms rich in savory umami flavor, creamy mushroom soups that melted in our mouths, and crispy mushroom chips. Each bite deepened my appreciation for the incredible versatility of mushrooms in the culinary world.

We also explored the cultivation of cordyceps—a process as delicate as it was intriguing. It required close attention to humidity and temperature, demanding both patience and precision. Watching them grow felt like witnessing a natural marvel, as the cordyceps gradually took shape, revealing a strange yet captivating blend of fungus and insect-like form.

In the experimental section, we carried out several fascinating tasks, including making spore prints and performing transfer inoculations. Creating spore prints allowed us to observe the distinctive patterns of various mushrooms, offering a visually captivating way to understand their reproductive traits. Meanwhile, the transfer inoculations introduced us to practical lab techniques for culturing fungi, giving us hands-on experience with sterile procedures and fungal propagation.

Another highlight of the course was our visit to a mushroom cultivation facility and a fungal specimen collection. Walking through the growing area, we saw rows upon rows of mushrooms at different stages of development—from tiny, pinhead-like primordia to fully matured caps. In the specimen room, we had the chance to closely observe a wide range of fungi, many with intricate shapes and striking colors. We also learned about their classification and ecological roles, deepening our appreciation for the diversity and importance of fungi in nature.

The final assessment for the course was a handmade project, and I chose to create a mushroom-shaped lamp. It was a challenging yet deeply rewarding endeavor. I spent a great deal of time researching, designing, and crafting the piece. By combining creativity with the knowledge I had gained throughout the course, I successfully completed this unique lamp. It not only reflected my understanding of mushrooms but also showcased my craftsmanship and personal expression.

This course wasn’t just about learning facts—it was a full-fledged exploration that engaged all our senses. It completely transformed the way I perceive mushrooms, turning them from ordinary organisms into fascinating subjects of study. I’m truly grateful to have been part of such a rich and inspiring learning journey.
