An Afternoon with the Stars: Volunteering at Lakeside School

2025-06-12

This afternoon, I joined fellow volunteers from Zhejiang University for a meaningful visit to Lakeside School, a special education center dedicated to children with autism. These incredible kids are often called stars children, each shining brightly in their own unique way.

A Special Performance

We were honored to witness a heartwarming performance, where the children sang and danced with infectious enthusiasm. Their pure joy and wholehearted effort touched us deeply, reminding everyone that its not perfection but genuine expression that makes a moment truly beautiful.

Sock Matching Activity

As part of the afternoons activities, I had the joy of facilitating a sock matching game. A variety of colorful socks, each with unique patterns, were spread out across the table, and the children used clothespins to pair them together.

It was wonderful to observe how each child approached the task in their own way. Some worked with quiet focus, carefully matching colors and designs. Others brought playful energy, inventing fun ways to connect the socks. Their bright smiles and bursts of laughter turned a simple game into a truly special moment.

Meaningful Connections

What touched me most was how such a simple activity created a bridge between our worlds. Through something as ordinary as matching socks, we shared moments filled with understanding, laughter, and genuine joy.

As we prepared to leave, the childrens bright smiles and warm waves stayed with me. This experience was a beautiful reminder that true connection doesnt always need grand gesturessometimes, its found in the simplest moments of everyday life.

Takeaway

Every individual experiences and expresses the world in their own unique way. Our role is not to change them, but to meet them where they arewith patience, understanding, and an open heart.
