My new chapter: renting an apartment off-campus

2025-10-28

As my second year of university drew to a close, my friends and I made a bold decision—to rent an apartment near campus. Stepping out of the dormitory felt like crossing a threshold into semi-adulthood, and the first month away from campus life has been a whirlwind of new experiences.

The process of securing our new home reminded me of my early days in China, marked by steep learning curves. Searching for suitable listings, negotiating with agents, finalizing contracts, registering at the police station, checking out of the dorm, and coordinating the move—each task demanded my full attention. Even after settling in, new responsibilities arose: arranging transportation with Huolala, communicating with property management and the landlord, and setting up our internet connection. These challenges equipped me with invaluable skills for independent living, propelling me toward maturity.

Living off-campus comes with its own set of hurdles. I now have to leave earlier for classes, and maintaining self-discipline is crucial amid countless distractions. However, investing in a personal study desk has been a game-changer. I no longer have to rush to the library at dawn to secure a seat; instead, I can dive into my studies whenever inspiration strikes.

What truly enchants me about Hangzhou is its unparalleled convenience. Our residential complex teems with delightful eateries just downstairs. On lazy days, a few taps on food delivery apps bring a variety of cuisines, daily necessities, and even medications to our doorstep within 30 minutes. Online shopping packages are delivered directly indoors, sparing me from braving the plum rain season, scorching summer heat, or freezing winter winds.

Beyond the practicalities, this move has transformed my lifestyle. Leaving the dormitory freed me from crowded communal living, granting me personal space and privacy. Sharing a cozy living room with my roommates has strengthened our bond through shared meals, movie nights, and heart-to-heart conversations. We’ve also embraced the joy of cooking together, hosting friends, and cherishing the comfort of our little haven. This newfound sense of “home” in Hangzhou has greatly enhanced my mental and physical well-being, allowing me to focus on meaningful connections while letting go of unnecessary social obligations.

As I reflect on this transition, I realize that renting this apartment isn’t just a change of address—it represents growth, independence, and the beautiful journey of carving out my own place in this vibrant city.
