Miracles only require a little courage and a willingness to try

The summer between my sophomore and junior years, I called the International Cooperation Office at my faculty to inquire about exchange programs. The next day, the staff informed me that there was one—a newly signed collaboration with the University of Hong Kong (HKU). I would be the very first student to participate, with no precedent or prior experience to draw upon.

Still, I decided to go. It was that little bit of courage that opened the door to one of the most joyful chapters of my life. In Hong Kong, I met professors at HKU and made friends from around the world, each encounter broadening the way I saw life.

During my academic exchange at HKU, I developed a more nuanced comparative legal perspective, refined my analytical skills, and gained deeper insight into cross-border legal practice and the dynamic interplay between China and the wider world. To explore the socio-legal dimensions of my future profession, I enrolled in The Legal Profession. I also took China Investment Law and Arbitration in Greater China to build a stronger foundation in real-world practice. In addition, I attended a series of lectures hosted by the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies, which further enriched my understanding of China’s evolving role in the global order.

Beyond academics, my time at HKU was equally rewarding on a personal level. I formed lasting friendships with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds and, through these exchanges, developed a deeper appreciation for the richness of the world around me. Together, we explored Hong Kong’s museums and art galleries, discovered hidden cafés tucked away in narrow streets, and watched the sunset over Victoria Harbour as the sea breeze brushed our faces. I also immersed myself in hall life, taking part in high table dinners, sports teams, and student representative elections—experiences that broadened my horizons and deepened my sense of belonging.

From Hong Kong I returned transformed. With just a spark of courage, I discovered miracles I had never imagined—self-confidence, friendship, and a life reborn.
