The First ZHITU Symposium on Advances in Civil Engineering held at ZJU

2018-07-27

The First ZHITU Symposium on Advances in Civil Engineering was held in the College of Civil Engineering and Architecture (CCEA), ZJU on July 12-14.

ZHITU stands for the union of five universities, namely, ZJU, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HK PolyU), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), the University of Tokyo (UoT) and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST). ZHITU, ‘智途’ in Chinese, also means ‘a smart path for the future’.

Covering topics on structures, materials, disaster mitigation and smart city, the first ZHITU symposium includes 5 keynote speeches, 19 invited lectures, 26 graduate reports, panel discussion and lab tour. Around 80 representatives from the five universities attended the symposium.

On the morning of July 12, Prof. YUN Chung Bang, Member of Korea Academy of Science and Technology and full-time adjunct professor of ZJU, Prof. B.F. Spencer from UIUC, Prof. NI Yiqing from HK PolyU, and Prof. LUO Yaozhi, dean of CCEA, ZJU and chair of ZHITU symposium jointly inaugurated the International Research Institute of Smart Structures Systems and Informatics (ISSSI). The ceremony was chaired by Prof. DUAN Yuanfeng, director of ZHITU local organizing committee.

During the keynote session, Prof. B.F. Spencer from UIUC shared the “State-of-the-art and Practice for Monitoring of Bridge Infrastructure in the USA”, Prof. NI Yiqing from HK PolyU talked about the “Bayesian Machine Learning in Structural Health Monitoring”, Prof. Myoungsu Shin from UNIST  presented “A Model for the Estimation of Crack Depth in Concrete by Surface-wave Transmission Analysis”, Prof. Tomonori Nagayama from UoT gave a speech on the “Infrastructure Monitoring Taking Advantage of IoT Technologies”, and Prof. YUN Chung Bang from ZJU shared “Structural Health Monitoring and Assessment for Safe-resilient Civil Infrastructure”.

Invited lectures were given in two conference rooms on the afternoon of July 12 and morning of July 13. Professors from the five universities shared their research and vision in the related field, such as “Use of Emerging Structural Materials and Systems for the Maintenance and Sustainability of Concrete Infrastructure”, “The Bond Behavior Between Concrete and Corroded Reinforcement: State of the Art”, “Prediction of Earthquake Ground Motion Propagations and Amplifications”, “Energy Regenerative Dampers for Simultaneous Vibration Control and Energy Harvesting”, “Fire Resistant Performance Evaluation for Steel Bridges”.

Followed on July 13 were the student presentation and the panel discussion. Graduates from the five universities presented their research on smart structures, intelligent materials, health monitoring, etc. And a panel discussion was held on future collaboration on education and research among the representatives from the five universities.
