ZJU's inaugural edition of Major Festival kicks off

2018-10-15

Mid-October is the time for more than 6,000 ZJU freshmen to declare their majors. In order to help them learn about different majors, the university held a special "major" exposition last weekend.

At this exposition, professors from 34 departments and schools acted as “exhibitors”. They showcased the dazzling highlights in their discipline to freshmen in a vivid and tangible manner.

The College of Control Science and Engineering displayed a self-developed quadruped robot dog named "Jueying". It has flexible limbs and can march to the music. It is also capable of adjusting its step and regaining its balance even after a hard push.

The College of Civil Engineering and Architecture provided access to a VR experience of a real building. As long as you put on the VR headset, you will feel as if you were in an elevator of a high-rise, feasting your eyes with the picturesque scenery outside the building.

The College of Agriculture and Biotechnology brought to the exhibition a myriad of butterfly and insect specimens.

The College of Chemical and Biological Engineering allowed students to synthesize different dyes with different reagents.

"The Major Festival is set up to help freshman to gain a better understanding of the university and the inter-disciplinary platform, to keep them well-informed about different majors before they declare their major, and to provide them with an opportunity to set their own goals. It is one of the innovative approaches to propelling the reform on liberal arts education and promoting high-caliber talent cultivation," said QIU Limin, dean of Qiushi College.

Major Expo is part of the Major Festival. The other three events are Major Talks, Major Open Day and Major Online.
