Prof. WU Yuzhe hailed as an author of Highly Cited Papers

2018-12-13

Essential Science Indicators (ESI) reveals the latest statistics about highly Cited Papers. Among them was Urban growth dilemmas and solutions in China: Looking forward to 2030, an article penned by Prof. WU Yuzhe and his PhD student LUO Jiaojiao,School of Public Affairs.

This article was published in Habitat International in 2016. In the article, WU Yuzhe et al. asserts that China’s urbanization and industrialization is replacing large amounts of farmland, prompted by relevant land finance regimes, with the intensified regional/local competition for manufacturing investment opportunities pushing local governments to expropriate farmland at low prices while leasing land at high market values to real estate developers. The additional revenue obtained in this way, termed financial increment in land value, can drive local economic growth and provide associated infrastructure and other public services. At the same time, however, a large number of inadequately compensated land-lost farmers have to migrate into urban areas for work, causing overheated employment and housing markets, with staggeringly unaffordable housing prices. This, together with various micro factors relating to the party/state's promotion/evaluation system, produces serious economic, environmental and social implications, particularly in migrant welfares, displacement of peasants and loss of land resources.

Highly cited papers are the top one percent in each of the 22 ESI subject areas per year. They are based on the most recent 10 years of publications. Highly Cited Papers are considered to be indicators of scientific excellence and top performance and can be used to benchmark research performance against field baselines worldwide.
