Young scientist speaks on the future of AI

2019-06-08

The whole society should reflect on the potential impacts of Artificial Intelligence, Prof. LIU Xuanzhe said last Sunday on a lecture at Zhejiang University.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently a hot concept thanks to the accumulation of data and the development of computing power. Deep learning has enabled AI to turn imagination into reality. AlphaGo, smart assistant apps, machine translation, and self-driving cars are all examples of its application.

With the inspiring prospects come challenges. “It is also important to notice the ethical and security issues in the era of AI,” Prof. LIU, doctoral supervisor at the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, Peking University, said on the lecture.

This lecture is part of the lecture series “Young scientists and their friends”, where leading young scientists talk about popular science. “These activities cover areas such as energy, information security, big data, life sciences, earthquake prevention and disaster mitigation,” Prof. BO Zheng, main organizer of the event, said in an interview.

Last month, ZJU announced a new undergraduate program on Artificial Intelligence. The program will welcome its first students this fall.
