2019-08-23

The Sino-EU Engineering Education Platform (SEEEP)International High Level Doctoral Summer School has been held for five years, with continuous and valuable efforts from all sides. The platform encourages face-to-face exchanges, which many students from China and Europe are always dreaming of." said Professor Yu Zitao, deputy dean of the School of Energy Engineering, Zhejiang University.

The event is jointly sponsored by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Zhejiang University. This year, the fifth summer school, with the theme of "Affordable Energy Transition", was launched in Zhejiang University from Aug. 19 to 26. More than 50 Ph.D. students and professors from 17 world-famous universities in China, Sweden, the Netherlands, Czech, Italy and Spain, gathered in Zhejiang University, focusing on the various possibilities of economic energy conversion.

During the summer school, the students worked closely in group, discussing a certain topic about social-economic constraints and technological solutions in energy transition. “In my group, we communicated well and I am proud of our final work! An amazing and beautiful campus and I am very much enjoyed my staying at ZJU,” said a student from Sweden.

In addition, they joined lectures by the professors in various topics and technical visits were arranged in Qingshan Lake Clean Energy Utilization Center of ZJU, Hangzhou RUNPAQ Technology Company, Zhejiang Energy Group and Hangzhou Gas Group. “The visits show more options of employment for Ph.D. students, and offer plenty of information about discipline development and hardware platforms. These are all encouragement and support for researchers,” said by a Chinese student.

“All over 10 scores out of 10, knowledgeable and fruitful. I learnt a lot of technical things and related research information from valuable teachers, and the school arrangement were five-star. Hope to join again,” said a student from Pakistan.

For the Ph.D. students that participate in the summer school, Professor Björn Laumert, Head of Energy Technology Department, from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, had very high expectations of them, and he said "With this school we had the opportunity to show that you cannot only say that I have great technology and ideas. This is all driven by an economic and social system that needs to change. You will be the generation that need to implement these in your home."

Also, Professor David Smeulders, Director of Energy Technology Research Center, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology, said “When we start to cooperate is when we start to know each other. I hope we will go back to wherever we came from and share good memories, ideas and opportunities to collaborate in the future.”
