Dialogue@ZJU:With Prof. GAO Xiang, Dean of College of Energy Engineering

2021-04-22

[Message from the editor: Today (April 22) is Earth Day, an international event celebrated around the world to pledge support for environmental protection. This year’s theme is “Restore Our Earth”. Let’s meet Prof. GAO Xiang, an expert on energy and environmental science and technology, who has been leading his team to develop a system to reduce emissions from fuel combustion.]

Quotes from the interview:

- For the past 30 years, I have been working on reduction of the emission of such pollutants as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulates, as well as the comprehensive utilization of carbon dioxide. We have done a lot of basic research and our research results have also been applied to PM2.5 control and clean utilization of energy through cooperation with enterprises.

- Our main achievement is the ultra-low emission technology for coal-fired power plants, which reduces the emissions from coal combustion to achieve the standard of natural gas.

- With the truth-seeking spirit, we have expanded our research and disciplines from energy to energy and environment, and to smart energy. In the future, we’ll also explore such new directions as energy storage and carbon neutrality.
