Based on agricultural products, food industry is fundamental to a country with increasing importance, which ensures the continuous increase of agricultural production, the improvement on the quality of life, and the promotion of rural industries. Food manufacturing is the key to healthy China. Since the 11th Five-year Plan, China has formulated and implemented a special program for agricultural products processing, and a batch of major agricultural product processing projects have been successively implemented in various places.
Food science covers the entire industrial chain, including field cultivation, harvesting, post-harvest logistics, processing and utilization, food nutrition and digestion, etc., which has obvious cross-trait. Food-related disciplines of Zhejiang University, including horticulture, food and pharmacy, were graded “A” by the Ministry of Education, occupying a leading position in China. Thus solid foundation is laid for the implementation of interdisciplinary researches.
The implementation of this project will support the development of agricultural products processing and logistics, combine the strength of related discipline, build up platform of food manufacturing, logistics technology and product development, and help establish ZJU's dominant position in this field.Download
Soil to the Earth is like skin to a man. It is the survival basis and essential wealth to human, which not only supports food production, but also supplys clean groundwater and protect biodiversity. However, in the past 20-30 years, with the rapid development of industrialization and economic growth, natural resources have been exploited. Large quantities of untreated sewage have been directly irrigated. Solid waste was discarded everywhere or simply land-filled. Unreasonable application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides resulted in serious soil pollution and big challenge for food safety and human health in China.
In 2014, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Land and Resources jointly issued the National Soil Pollution Survey Bulletin. The survey shows that the condition of soil environment in China, especially the cultivated land area, isn't optimistic currently. The total pollution points of national soil exceeded 16.1%, cultivated land exceeded the standard rate, which is as high as 19.4%, and the area of medium and heavy polluted arable land increased up to 3.3 million hectares, mainly suffering from the pollution of heavy metals and organic pollutants. It is urgent to implement the economic, efficient and feasible pollution remediation technology.
In order to deal with the problem of soil pollution, Chinese government has already launched “the Action Plan for Soil Pollution Prevention and Control” in 2016. Meanwhile, the government is currently promoting legislation on prevention and control of soil pollution. Under such circumstances, Zhejiang University established a Science and Technology Alliance for Key Technologies Research in Contaminated Soil Remediation to promote soil pollution control and remediation from laboratory to industrialization.Download

Chronic non-infectious diseases are among the most concerned diseases that threaten the health of Chinese people. According to the Report on Nutrition and Chronic Diseases of Chinese Residents (2015) issued by the State Council, the mortality of chronic diseases in China was 533/10 million, and chronic non-infectious diseases accounted for 86.6% of the total deaths in 2012. Among them, cardiovascular diseases, malignant tumors, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes and neuropsychiatric diseases are the main causes of death, and the incidences are increasing rapidly. The proportion of these major diseases increased from 65.5% in 1990 to 79.4% in 2010. More seriously, due to the change of life style and the aging of the population, it is expected that the morbidity in China will continue to grow in the next 10-15 years.
The overall goal of this project is to solve the key problems in treating cardiovascular diseases, malignant tumors, COPD, diabetes and neuropsychiatric disorders and other serious major chronic diseases that threaten people's health through large sample, population-based multicenter clinical trials.
We aim to set up public platforms, establish and perfect the research system and innovation network to make significant breakthroughs in the prevention and control of major chronic diseases. New technologies, molecular markers and prevention guidelines will be identified and developed.
Four programs are included in this project:
- Development of new technology and scheme on cervical cancer screening and intervention;
- Study on correlations with nutrition and influence factors in children and adolescents with diabetes;
- Identification of early diagnosis biomarkers and comprehensive diagnosis index system in Parkinson's disease;
- Tumor therapy by targeting tumor lactate anions and hydrogen ions.Download
Zhejiang University is one of the pioneering Chinese universities in the research on robotics and intelligent machines. In early 1980s, ZJU carried out researches on the industrial robots. The earliest domestic "six degree of freedom series hydraulic mechanical arm" was manufactured in that period.
In the field of robotics and intelligent equipments, ZJU has already been equipped with good research and technology foundation. In order to facilitate further integration of the preponderant research power intramural, and also to promote our research level through the multidisciplinary cooperation, the Research Alliance of Robotics and Intelligent Machines has been established.
The Alliance is led by Professor YANG Huayong, member of Chinese Academy of Engineering. It has integrated five faculties, namely science, engineering, information, agriculture and medicine, and more than 30 research groups. The Alliance concentrates on the international frontier of robotics and intelligent machines. Meanwhile, aiming at 3-5 advantageous research directions during the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan”and achieving an advanced level internationally, the Alliance carries out both basic research and key technological research. In addition, it will also manufacture a batch of robotics and intelligent machines or products, aiming to make Zhejiang University an essential research and development hub.Download
The goal of our alliance is to investigate synthetic control of excited states, physical-chemical properties and applications of colloidal quantum dots (QDs).
Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are a unique class of fluorescent materials with quantum confinement effects. Owning to their outstanding optical properties, such as broad-band absorption, narrow and tunable emission, high photoluminescence quantum yield and high photo-chemical stability, QDs have great potential in the fields of biomedical imaging and photoelectric devices. Their optical and electrical properties can be continuously tuned by size and composition.
Besides, compared with the conjugated organic/polymer light-emitting materials and fluorescent protein, QDs have superior advantages like thermal, optical, and chemical stability, small excited state relaxation energy, long photoluminescence life and high color purity. Compared with the phosphor and other inorganic solid luminescence materials, they have other advantages including superior color purity, flexible synthetic chemistry and solution processability. Therefore, QDs are expected to be understanding materials for light-emitting diode and other applications.
We aim to establish an international leading research alliance in the field of QDs, focusing on the basic scientific problems-the excited states of QDs with scopes on synthesis chemistry, ligand chemistry, spectroscopy and the related applications.
