2016-03-18

On the afternoon of March 16, Zhejiang University granted the title of ZJU Honorary Professor to Norbert Rubin Morgenstern, an internationally recognized authority in the field of geotechnical engineering from Canada, who also delivered a speech titled “The Stability of Earth Structures: Risk and Reliability”.

Professor Morgenstern graduated from the University of Toronto in 1956 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering. He studied Soil Mechanics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology at the University of London. His first research was into the mechanics of slope stability as it applies to the evaluation of landslides and the design of dams. This early research received recognition by the award on two occasions of the British Geotechnical Society Prize. In 1965, Morgenstern and Price proposed Morgenstern-Price Method that the inclination of the interslice resultant force is assumed to vary according to a “proportion” of an arbitrary function.

Dr. Morgenstern is the recipient of over 40 major honors and awards, including honorary degrees from the University of Toronto and Queen’s University. He has delivered the prestigious Rankine, Terzaghi, Casagrande, Rocha and Lumb Lectures. Dr. Morgenstern is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. He is a Foreign Associate of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, a Foreign Member of the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering and a Foreign Fellow of the Indian Academy of Engineering. Dr. Morgenstern is a Member of the Alberta Order of Excellence and the Order of Canada.
