2016-03-24

The Zhejiang University delegation led by Executive Vice President Song Yonghua visited Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) and Fundação Dom Cabral (FDC) to explore the prospects for partnership on March 14-19. Meanwhile, together with the ZJU delegation, the University of Bath delegation led by Provost Bernie Morley made a joint trip to USP and UNICAMP in order to strive for bilateral or trilateral cooperation in education and research among universities in China, the UK and Brazil.

On March 16, the ZJU delegation and the Bath delegation visited UNICAMP and held a talk with Vice-Rector Alvaro Penteado Crósta, Vice-President (International Affairs) Luís Cortez and professors in different colleges. Song Yonghua introduced the development of ZJU and talked primarily about international cooperation and exchange work at ZJU, including the construction of International Campus. He said that ZJU collaborated chiefly with European and American universities at present and expected that it would expand its cooperation with universities in other countries and regions, in particular those in BRICS countries, in the coming years. The three universities held discussions in terms of tripartite cooperation in education and research. Song Yonghua hoped that ZJU would launch student exchange programs, which UNICAMP found very engrossing,. The University of Bath proposed the idea of carrying out joint research into common subjects and sought for financial support from Sao Paulo Research Foundation. UNICAMP expressed their interest in cooperative projects in biological energy, environment, transportation, clean water, agriculture and international trade. Song Yonghua recommended that a joint seminar be conducted so as to promote mutual understandings and locate cooperation domains.

On March 17, the ZJU delegation and the Bath delegation paid a visit to USP and held a talk with Maurício da Silva Baptista, President of USP International Office. USP took a keen interest in summer/winter exchange programs between ZJU and USP and proposed that a relevant agreement be signed. In terms of research cooperation, ZJU, USP and Bath reached a preliminary consensus regarding exchange and cooperation approaches.

On the same day, the ZJU delegation also visited Fundação Dom Cabral and met with Professor and Project Director John Mueller and Management Consultant André Proença. John Mueller talked mainly about international strategy of FDC and its cooperation with enterprises. FDC’s partners included Kellogg School of Management at Northeastern University, Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business in China as well as small- and medium-sized enterprises in Brazil. Song Yonghua said that located in Zhejiang  Province, which has dynamic privately-owned economy, ZJU was marked by one of its core education—entrepreneurship. He looked forward to cooperating with FDC in high-level management training.
