The Second edition of the Chinese Folk Music Concert kicked off with a rousing and vigorous guzheng (zither) performance of “Fighting the Typhoon” in the Residential College of Haining Campus on May 2.
This concert was featured by traditional Chinese musical instruments, including the guzheng, the guqing, the pipa, the xiao, the bamboo flute and the hulusi. The piano was also a perfect complement to the concert.
A series of classical masterpieces, including Fisherman’s Chant at Night, House of Flying Daggers, Beyond the Clouds and Bamboo in the Moonlight, were staged. One of the highlights of the concert was the duo performance of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which perfectly interpreted the fusion and clash of oriental and occidental arts.
Not only was this concert the very epitome of a holistic approach to education, but it mirrored cultural pluralism in the Residential College and its unswerving effort to build a “pluralistic cultural village”. By appreciating the charm of Chinese folk music, students also gained a more insightful and concrete understanding of traditional Chinese culture.
