An encounter with Yunhe Rice Terraces: Students of China Studies participate in the Ploughing Ceremony

2018-06-12

In the southwest of Zhejiang Province lies one of China's most beautiful rice terraces - Yunhe Rice Terraces. Hidden in the misty mountainous areas, the place is known for its unique landscape and folk culture.

A great chance to experience the wonders of Yunhe terraces in person, seven international students of ZJU were invited to the 12th Yunhe Terraces Ploughing Ceremony on June 1st. This ceremony, marking the first plough of the year, is held annually during the season of "Grain in Ear" (Mangzhong) in the area of Meiyuan, Yunhe county. The tradition is carried out to pray for happiness and prepare for the upcoming busy season.

Hjorth Janus, a Nordic student, said: "The scenery here is very beautiful. My friends and I have planned a trip here for several days to enjoy the Chinese countryside." On that day, he visited an ancient village called Kenggen in Yunhe, and joined the locals in a cultural performance. During the performance, he sang folk songs with the She bride, drank yellow rice wine, and got to learn how a She bridegroom acts in a traditional wedding.
