On July 10, BI Lei, a principal investigator with the School of Earth Sciences at Zhejiang University, received the 2019 IAMAS (International Association for Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences) Early Career Scientist Medal Award at the 100th IAMAS Annual Meeting in Montreal, Canada in recognition of his outstanding contribution to research on light scattering by non-spherical and inhomogeneous particles with applications in atmospheric radiative transfer, remote sensing and climate science.

The IAMAS Early Career Scientist Medal recognizes young scientists under the age of 40 who have made outstanding contributions to meteorology and atmospheric science. Only one scientist has the honor to win this crown every two years. It is the first time that a Chinese scientist has won the award.
