One World, One Health

2020-03-03

Today is the UN World Wildlife Day,which is observed to mark the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973. The theme of 2020 is Sustaining all Life on Earth.

The world is tackling with COVID-19 infection, which is thought to be related to other coronaviruses that circulate in bats. Natural reservoir of this virus is probably these flying mammals. The intermediate host involved in the transmission to humans, which is probably another mammal, has not yet been identified. Current epidemic sends us a reminder the earth that we live on does not just belong to humans, but also the millions of wild animals and plants. The rapid development of modern world has led to increasing crossover of boundaries between humans and wildlife, which endangers the wellbeing of both. As mentioned in the WWD 2020 message of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, he urged us to push for a more caring, thoughtful and sustainable relationship with nature.

“One World,One Health”is not just a slogan. It is an attitude to live harmonically with other species and our responsibility to protect our home planet.
