Prof. LIU Bin joins Zhejiang University

In September 2020, Prof. LIU Bin, former director of the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, joined the Zhejiang University School of Art and Archaeology as an eminent expert in liberal arts.

Prof. LIU Bin is currently an executive board member of the Archaeological Society of China and director of the Archaeological Society of Zhejiang Province. His major interest of research is prehistoric archaeology. Since he embarked on his career at the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology in 1985, He has made immense contributions to the discipline of archaeology and cultural relics in Zhejiang Province. He has participated in many archaeological excavations in important sites, two of which were named among China’s Top 10 Annual Greatest Archaeological Discoveries.

In 1996, Prof. LIU Bin was in charge of the excavation of the Nanhebang site in Jiaxing. It was the first time that shrines and cemeteries of the Songze culture had been discovered. The archaeological research into the Nanhebang site revealed the evolution of objects of the Songze culture, identified the chronological sequence of the Songze culture and ushered in a new epoch in studies of the Songze culture.

Between 2006 and 2007, Prof. LIU Bin headed the archaeology of the Liangzhu site and discovered Liangzhu Ancient City which is the first Neolithic city site in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. This archaeological discovery promoted the development of China’s prehistoric archaeology. In 2019, the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City were inscribed onto the UNESCO World Heritage list as a sacred testament to China’s glorious civilization.

Prof. LIU Bin has published more than 70 research articles and 7 books, including “Report on the Excavation of the Songze Culture Site in Nanhebang”, “A Comprehensive Study of Liangzhu Ancient City”, “Ritual Tools and King Power” and “The 5000-year Liangzhu Kingdom”.
