ZJU president meets with UChicago president remotely

On October 14, Prof. WU Zhaohui, president of Zhejiang University had a virtual meeting with Prof. Paul Alivisatos, president of the University of Chicago. Also present at the meeting were Katie Hrinyak, assistant vice president for Global Initiatives and Strategy at the University of Chicago, and LI Min, director of the Office of Global Engagement at Zhejiang University.

WU Zhaohui extended his heartfelt congratulations to Paul Alivisatos on Douglas Diamond’s winning of the 2022 Nobel Prize for Economics. He looked back on cooperation in talent training and scientific research between the two universities over the years, including research internships and exchange programs, top-notch co-authored papers in the fields of materials, medicine and data science, and institutional activities such as bilateral academic conferences. “In the face of the changing times and pressing global challenges, Zhejiang University will continue to promote Global ZJU 2.0 and Z4G to address common issues together with partners worldwide. We look forward to working hand in hand with the University of Chicago in sustainable development, fundamental research and joint training programs,” said WU Zhaohui.

Paul Alivisatos expressed his delight in meeting with President WU Zhaohui remotely and sent his congratulations on the 125th anniversary of Zhejiang University. He was highly supportive of long-term cooperation between the two universities, expressing the hope to further cooperation, particularly in the area of climate change. “We have plans for research that go all the way from economics and policy to energy technology to new approaches to how to respond to the environmental challenges. We are very open to have further conversations with you,” said Paul Alivisatos.

Katie Hrinyak and LI Min offered new updates on cooperation between the two universities and exchanged ideas on future work. Katie Hrinyak stressed that she was deeply impressed by “many individual faculty partnerships” continued “despite the pandemic” and intellectualism of the visiting ZJU students. LI Min believed that the two universities will communicate closely and deepen cooperation in major areas. Both sides expressed their great expectations of exchange visits offline.
