Reaching new heights: the inspiring story of Zhejiang University Rock Climbing Team

2023-06-06

Defying gravity, conquering peaks, and pushing boundaries - when these keywords come to mind, one might instantly think of the fearless adventurers who scale treacherous mountains. Rock climbing is an extreme sport that tests strength, technique, and determination, and for many, it appears to be an extraordinary feat that is out of reach. However, a group of students on campus are dedicating their sweat and effort to this sport. They are the members of the Zhejiang University Rock Climbing Team.

Mastering rock climbing requires a journey from zero to hero, involving constant practice and mutual support. Senior members provide one-on-one guidance to new members, ensuring they are well-supported in their training. The new members entrust their climbing lifeline to a trusted mentor. WANG Leqi, a 2021 undergraduate team member, recalls, When I first joined the team, senior members helped me a lot, and they were always there to protect me while I was practicing. I felt very secure. As they interact and progress together, the team's bond grows stronger, forming a close-knit family.

In addition to daily practice, the team frequently organizes friendly matches within the team, allowing members to learn from one another and collectively progress in their climbing skills. They also venture off-campus to natural climbing sites, exchanging experiences with professional-level outdoor climbers. Through their persistent efforts, the team has gained several prizes and awards.

The team is not only reaching new heights but also pursuing personal life peaks. Establishing a rock-climbing team has always been my career dream, says LIU Ming, coach of Zhejiang University Rock Climbing Team. He joined Zhejiang University in 2015 and introduced rock climbing course. Students in the course fell in love climbing and sought to continue practicing even after the course ended. Thus, the team was born, growing from humble beginnings to its current size. The team has witnessed Liu's dream evolve from a budding idea to a realized ambition.

For the students, mastering climbing techniques and improving their physical fitness is only part of the journey. They have also cultivated a strong, resilient character. Many team members have experienced finger joint injuries in the process. However, the pain serves as a crucible to forge their willpower. With such tenacity, they excel in their academic and personal lives, gaining admission to prestigious graduate programs and winning awards in academic competitions.
