From Classroom to Concert: The Stunning Pipa Transformation

In the autumn-winter semester of 2024, I was fortunate to enroll in the course Opening the Door to Art – Pipa, taught by Teacher Xu Tianye. With my background in traditional Chinese music, I have always been passionate about Chinese musical instruments. This course starts from the basics, and even for students like me who have some prior knowledge, there is still plenty to learn. Teacher Xu provides personalized guidance tailored to each student's level, making the learning experience both enriching and engaging.

In class, Teacher Xu maintains an excellent teaching rhythm. The explanations are highly detailed, and the teacher closely monitors each student's learning progress. When encountering more challenging concepts, the pace is slowed down, allowing time for those who need extra support.

Under Teacher Xu's careful guidance, we began practicing the most fundamental fingering techniques. From feeling completely lost at first, we gradually became more skilled. Throughout the course, we systematically learned the basic D and C keys and practiced the classic piece Fengyang Huagu as well as the TV drama song Liangzhou Dabian in depth.

As the semester came to an end, my friend and I were honored to be selected as performers for the course concert due to our outstanding performance in class. The moment we received the news, our excitement and joy were beyond words.

Initially, I chose this course simply out of my love for the pipa, never expecting to have the opportunity to perform on stage.

In the following weeks, determined to deliver our best performance, we practiced tirelessly. Finally, the day arrived—I stepped onto the school theater’s stage for the first time, wearing a gorgeous dress. As the spotlight focused on me, a mix of nervousness and anticipation filled my heart.

With the first note, I immersed myself in the music, and when the final note faded away, the audience erupted into thunderous applause. Under the bright lights, my friend and I bowed deeply before slowly leaving the stage. At that moment, everything felt like a dream, as if all my efforts had transformed into a dazzling light.

I am truly grateful for my dedication, which allowed my teacher to notice me and grant me this precious opportunity.

In this concert, most of the performers had no prior musical background. Yet, everyone gave their all, wholeheartedly showcasing what they had learned throughout the semester. Each performance was truly remarkable, reflecting the dedication and passion of every student. Through their hard work and perseverance, they expressed their love for art, making the concert shine brilliantly.

This experience has not only deepened my love for the pipa but also given me an unforgettable memory. I believe it will be a precious asset on my life journey, constantly inspiring me to explore the beauty of art even further.
